Flash floods ravage Oddar Meanchey and Ratanakiri

Featured Replies

Ratanakiri and Oddar Meanchey provinces are facing flash floods and have begun evacuating residents. Authorities are starting to evacuate people in Ratanakiri province’s Lumphat district to shelters as the water level in Sre Pok River is still over the danger mark.

Provincial Water Resources Department director Van Na said water level are starting to recede in the upper part of the Sesan and Sre Pok Rivers but it is rising in the lower parts affecting Lumphat and Veun Sai districts. “Authorities are starting to evacuate people to shelters (yesterday). This action is to avoid chaos when floods occur in a rush,” said Na.

Provincial National Committee for Disaster Management (NCDM) official Neang Sam Ath said yesterday that the rain stopped yesterday but the water level is still over the danger mark. Sam Ath said water level in Sre Pok River had risen up to 13.15 metres at 3.30pm yesterday where the danger mark is 12.50 metres. The water level in Sesan River rose up to 9.42 metres where the danger mark is 8.50 metres.
