Real Player With Ubuntu 7

Recommended Posts

I am back here again, with the same problem..............I have installed Ubuntu 7.....and it went in easily, and works beautifully..........except for listening to the BBC.............

I have downloaded RealPlayer 10 GOLD.bin....and it is again on the desk top....just waiting to be installed.

I have been online, and was told to double click on the download, and then I would be given the relevant instructions...............HAH!

when I double click on it....all I get is the option to open it ....or to save it,,,,Tried both....it opens with firefox...and the other option puts a duplicate download on the desktop.............[.I did have several copies]

Have searched repositories for something which resembles real player...................and drawn a blank......so I am still baffled..............................help!!!!!!!

You may have to change the permission on the file. Open a terminal, go to the directory where the BIN file is located at (Desktop?), and then issue the following command:

chmod +x GOLD.bin

Then just run it using the terminal:

./GOLD.bin

Note: If the filename is something other than GOLD.bin then replace it as appropriate in the commands above.

dave_boo....i followed that link...and have downloaded the linux version of realplayer...and there it sits...intact....on my desktop.....so am no further forward.........

there is probably a very simple answer to all this.... possibly so simple that even I may understand how to do it......................................helpppppppppppppppppp

went into add/remove....asked for helix.....and it installed very quickly.....but when I tried the BBC,,,,still no joy.....it still asks for realplayer......so the helix thingy is not being recognised by theBBC...is there a way to get it working?

what else needs to be done?

It's most likely on BBC's end. I get errors running Opera visiting some websites (I refuse to allow it to identify itself as IE!!!).

If you're not comfortable with the command line, I suggest following this link. I'm not a Ubuntu user, stuck on SuSE here, but adding additional repositories is a must. Ubuntu ships without certain programmes, due to those programmes either being closed source or of dubious legal standing--ie, dvd playback.

If you want the hardcore way do this, and assuming it's on your desktop:

Open terminal (preferably a superuser one-if not, follow instructions below-if you can open a superuser one, don't bother with sudo)

sudo mkdir /home/yourloginname/RealPlayer

cd /home/yourloginname/Desktop

sudo ./RealPlayer10GOLD.bin

follow the instructions

when it comes to the "Enter the complete path to the directory where you want

RealPlayer to be installed.", type in this:

/home/yourloginname/RealPlayer

(hint, it should be in the area to the left of where you're typing--mine is /home/dave_boo/RealPlayer)

it will ask you this :

configure system-wide symbolic links?

you type in "Y"

than it asks this:

enter the prefix for symbolic links [/usr]:

to which you can type in "/usr" or simply hit enter!

cd /home/yourloginname/RealPlayer/mozilla

sudo cp nphelix.so /usr/lib/firefox/plugins

sudo cp nphelix.xpt /usr/lib/firefox/components

(last two steps are just to be sure that Firefox knows about them)

Restart Firefox.

And than you should be done! I however had to click on the "Launch this in a standalone player", but your milage may vary.

I have no doubt that I shallsoon be back on the forum, pleading for more help! BEWARE!!

Ron,

did you read wanda sloan yesterday in the database section of the bangkok post? she called realplayer one of the 2 awfulest media players in the world. is there no other option for bbc?

The BBC site asks for either BBC radio player, or real player......NO other options.....BBC player is not available....so I must have real player..............and some where in the system, the alternate players are not being recognised..

I missed the weds edition of bkk post......but shall get a copy from my mate when he has finished reading it...

There are plenty of installers that can make the life of Linux new users easier. That one should help you to install real player and many more softwares:

http://www.getautomatix.com/

Here's the list of all apps it can easily install for you:

http://getautomatix.com/wiki/index.php?tit...ware_and_Tweaks

Thanks very much , jackk, just what I needed.....

Automatix installed quickly, and is up and running............................................unfortunately....

"A FATAL ERROR OCCURRED DURING INSTALLATION OF REAL PLAYER".....

so it is now obvious to me that some snidey bastard has put a curse on me and my laptop.................but i really can live without BBC..............it is just annoying me that it will not work..............and i shall not even think about windows........

They talk about problems with Real player on their website:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio/audiohelp_nix.shtml

I'm not using Real player but I tried to click on the "Listen to latest news" with gxine and also mplayer and strangely the Real player file doesn't work (rtsp://rmlive.bbc.co.uk/bbc-rbs/rmlive/ev7/live24/worldservice/livenews_v8.ra) while the Windows Media player one does (mms://a1149.l1305038288.c13050.g.lm.akamaistream.net/D/1149/13050/v0001/reflector:38288)

Same for BBC Radio 1 (mms://wmlive-acl.bbc.co.uk/wms/radio1/radio1_nb_e1s1).
