Thai media Daily News said that social media was abuzz with complaints from netizens asking why banking apps on mobile phones always crashed on the 1st and 16th of the month.

 

These are the days when the winning numbers in the state lottery are always announced.

 

Yesterday was no different.

 

People found that transfers to people were not going through and onliners could not pay for goods and food services causing a lot of trouble.

 

The banks advised people to space out their transactions as there was always lots of traffic on these days.

 

They also advised users to log off and log in again. 

 

They announced that things were back to normal at 7pm and that transfers already made would be in the system by 7 pm today.

 

Daily News made much of the complaints asking why, oh why can't the apps cope.

 

But they didn't appear to have asked any banks, if their report was anything to go by, notes ASEAN NOW.

The reason is because  huge numbers of transfers  from people playing the "underground" lottery.

When/if ever they fully modernise the state run "legal" lottery then the problem will abate.
