BANGKOK (NNT) - The Cabinet today approved another purchase deal for 30 million doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, including an option for pediatric doses. Deliveries for these extra doses are expected to start in the first quarter of next year.

The Cabinet today in its weekly meeting endorsed a proposal to purchase 30 million more doses of the Pfizer-BioNTech Comirnaty vaccine to supply the country’s inoculation campaign next year.

Government Spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said these additional 30 million doses are scheduled for delivery from the first through the third quarters of 2022, with an option to change the product to a pediatric version for use in younger children.

Combining with the current supply agreement for 30 million doses this year, Pfizer Thailand will be delivering a total of 60 million COVID-19 jabs ordered by the Thai government.

This deal is a part of the government’s plan to procure more COVID-19 doses to supply the country’s inoculation campaign, which will also include more jabs from AstraZeneca. These plans have already been approved by the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration.

This is good news.

Hopefully some of these will be offered as boosters for those previously vaccinated with 2x Pfizer.

Yes, now need third doses. The superior vaccines don't work in two doses because exploding infections in European countries and USA prove it and FDA has already approved third doses for all adults.

Well the third dose is a half one, so let us call it 2.5!

In the U.S., the boosters from Pfizer and J&J are the same formulation and dosage as the initial vaccines, but Moderna’s booster is half the dose — 50 micrograms — of the first two shots.

from all the news reports I see about new surge in infections is predominantly among the unvaccinated, not the vaccinated.  Yes there are more vaccinated people getting infected too but they are reportedly less serious and fewer deaths.  Hospitals in the US report that they are full or getting full due to unvaccinated.  In some countries having universal health care, they indicate that they will not give free treatment to unvaccinated for COVID-19 infections.  Hopefully, the "better" vaccines ordered here will arrive sooner rather than later and people will then actually get them like those that have already paid for Moderna but govt hasn't been providing the vaccines donated to the hospitals.

As for Astrazeneca here, the govt recommends none of this for anyone under 60 years of age especially females.  The only choice some have had is Sinovac doubles or mixed, then a booster when the better vaccines arrive.

Presume "here" is Thailand so please show a reference to where they have stated AZ is not suitable for under 60s?

In Thailand it may even be a poke under the skin, so 2.1??

or is that genius innovative idea lost in the pile of BS now?

I am unsure whether that idea is being implemented now... big fuss then never mentioned again.

The "AZ and females under 65" comment is surely wrong, since my 41 year old gf recently got AZ from the government on 11/16, second shot scheduled for January.  Back in the summer I paid THB 4,500 ahead for two shots of Moderna for her at a hospital in Khon Kaen, but supplies are slow arriving and she is still far back in the queue. However she is allowed to give her Moderna away or sell it to someone.

Any truth to the Aussie media reports that the health minister was attending Switzerland for a meeting with other countries health ministers and WHO but but not allowed into Switzerland because he had 2 Sinovac and 1 AZ shot. If so, how embarrassing for him and Thailand
