For the first time, Siem Reap will hold a Kite Festival on December 19 to showcase Khmer traditional kites, created and made by people living in the Banteay Srei district. The kite festival will be held in Tbeng commune’s Sar Sei village near Kulen Mountain, amid a natural scenic environment, waterfall, and the much-needed breeze to fly the kites.

Banteay Srei district governor Khim Finang said yesterday that the kite festival will showcase Khmer traditional kites handmade creatively by locals in the Banteay Srei district. “So far, there are 12 kite owners registered to participate in the festival and we have a booth to sell these handmade kites to locals, visitors, and tourists to take back as souvenirs and in remembrance of Cambodia,” he added.

With them holding the kite festival for the first time, Finang said they might encounter some teething problems due to lack of experience and technique but would definitely put up a better show  next year with a kite competition to attract more participants.
