Futon / Shikibuton .... or whatever else is out there that's similar

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm in need of a good quality mattress to sleep on the floor.  I'm not your typical Westerner when it comes to sleeping.  I require a pretty firm mattress to get a proper nights sleep.  I'm not sure where to begin looking for something decent like this in Thailand.

Any experience or knowledge highly praised.

Try Futon Tokyo, but not cheap once you add on shipping, duty and VAT. Despite the cost, really impressed with the futon set which we have had for a month now.

Many/most/all cheap mattresses are really hard here. It’s common to have a wood box covered with a thin layer of padding that is called a mattress. If that’s not hard enough then the way many monks sleep is on a wood bench with no mattress or a very thin one made of cotton tubes stuffed with a hard material.

Maybe the classic Thai "futon". But you need to get good quality. Typically 2,000 to 3,000THB,

Not as good as a quality futon from Japan, but plentiful in Thailand

That is the style of mattress I was talking about, though the triangle shape section is optional, and it’s a totally different beast to all the Japanese futons I saw in all the shops in Japan over the years, the expensive ones are as good quality as the Japanese futons just a different style.

Norman, approximately how much did you have to pay on top of the original purchase price to have the set arrive at your front door in Thailand?

I'm leaning towards just a shikibuton and throw it on top of whatever decent thin covering i can find.  Do you find the tatami mat adds value to the whole sleeping experience?
