PHUKET (NNT) - Phuket has been preparing for its New Year’s countdown event, with Italian tenor Andrea Bocelli officially confirmed to appear on stage for the celebration.

Tourism and Sports Minister Phiphat Ratchakitprakarn announced Bocelli’s participation in the "Amazing Thailand Countdown 2022, Amazing New Chapters @Phuket" event beginning at 8 p.m. at Saphan Hin, with performances to also include 10 Thai artists and conclude with a spectacular firework show.

The minister said the festivities will proceed under strict disease control measures. All attendees will be required to show proof of having received two vaccine injections and a negative COVID-19 test result no more than 72 hours prior to entry. Participants are also recommended to follow social distancing measures due to an increase in infections related to the new Omicron variant.

Thapanee Kiatpaiboon, deputy governor of the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), stated local residents have been on high alert since the reopening of the sandbox tourism program on July 1. She nevertheless expressed optimism that the countdown gala event will demonstrate that people can still have fun while following health safety protocols.

Phuket deputy governor Piyapong Choowong meanwhile said local authorities are prepared for New Year’s Eve festivities and have been providing updates to the COVID-19 operation center. The provincial communicable disease committee has also reviewed and approved prevention measures for implementation in order for everyone to have a safe and fun holiday.

Which have all seemed to be useless at the airports for stopping Omicron getting in...

Good luck Thailand...

January is going to be an eye-opener.

We'll be there and I'll probably be teary eyed at this angelic voice. I had the great pleasure and honour of seeing him sing outdoors in Florence and Rome some years back and they were truly magical and beautiful hours.

How did you get the tickets?

I haven't seen any form of advertising.

Search for omicron specials, they are sure to come up with tickets for this event.

No need.

Bocelli's Facebook page announced today that he is doing a live concert in Malta on December 31.

And if this is true, then the Tourism and Sport's minister should resign immediately for such blatant lies, but of course that would never happen.
