as for me,  burma (or myanmar) has always been  "a state of emergency" as long as i can remember, even before the last coup d'etat, i.e. the real power has always been held by the military.  and that  is why their reaction was so swift and violent  when the party of Aung San Suu Kyi pretended to bring democratic reforms
