If you factor in the storage & risk costs of the waste products- over at least millions of years if not billions- there's no possible way the cost can compete with any conceivable price of fossil fuels (not to mention more renewable energy sources). It's a cynical trick for politicians to sell "cheap" power to the masses without revealing its true costs (which anyway will be borne by their descendants many, many, many times over). Just dump the stuff where you don't want people to go and you will see how nice things will be in this area. Have you actually seen pictures from areas where nuclear trash was dumped. Quite nice environment. And who cares if you loose one or two years of live expectation .... Smokers .... ?!?! Prime Minister Gen Surayud Chulanont reports that the IAEA Director General Dr. Mohamed ElBaradei (โมฮัมเหม็ด อัลบาราดี) recently attended a seminar on the development of science and technology in a bid to construct a nuclear power plant in Thailand. Gen Surayud said that preparations are underway to train personnel and create understanding among citizens on the issue. The IAEA Director General affirmed his belief that Thailand will be fully capable of developing nuclear technology for peaceful endeavors. The Prime Minister said that the world is undergoing radical changes, many of which can be attributed to scientific and technological causes. Gen Surayud advised adherence to the self-sufficiency economic principle, grassroot development, the establishment of a regional market, environmental conservation, and strengthening of all sectors. geriatrickid Posted July 18, 2007 Share Posted July 18, 2007 where's the nuclear waste going to be buried again? my limited understanding of Thailand's geography is that it doesn't have the same time of rock structure deep underground that let's you store spent fuel. And now for my NIMBY momement; It will probably take 10 years to build so I'll probably be resettled in Coasta Rica or Panama by then so it's not my concern. I used to like and respect Lovelock for his Gaia hypothesis and avant garde views on the environment, but I think he may be turning a bit ga-ga now over his nuclear power advocacy. David Bellamy is another one who's gone nuts over nuclear, mainly because he's a NIMBY when it comes to wind generators on his beloved sphagnum (sp?) moss bogs. Prof. Dr. Yongyuth chaired the meeting on nuclear science and technology today (August 16th) at Bitec Bangna, and the meeting was organized by Thailand’s Institute of Nuclear Technology (TINT). Studies and researches on nuclear technology were displayed at the event. Prof. Dr. Yonyuth says nuclear technology can be useful in medical and jewelry professions. In addition, a nuclear power plant will not cause global warming. However, it is costly to build a nuclear power plant. He further says that a nuclear power plant does not have to depend on fuel prices. However, it has to be careful with the risk of encountering accidents and natural disasters such as earthquakes. Nevertheless, he says a nuclear power plant in Japan is able to withstand an earthquake and it spilled little radioactive waste, which is not dangerous.
