webfact
BANGKOK (NNT) - Bangkok City Hall has ordered a city-wide renovation of pedestrian crossings, following a tragic incident in which an ophthalmologist was hit by a motorbike while crossing the road. The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) said the crosswalk renovation campaign will involve the installation of warning signs, pavement markings and new paint work to improve visibility. The BMA and the Royal Thai Police are also collaborating to install push buttons for pedestrian signals at 100 more locations, in addition to the existing 226 crosswalks equipped with this system. There are 3,280 crosswalks in Bangkok, 1,277 of which are equipped with flashing light warning systems and 226 with push buttons. 430 crosswalks have already been repainted with red backgrounds to improve visibility. The crosswalk in front of Bhumirajnakarindra Kidney Institute where the tragic incident occurred is also being renovated with red paint and wider markings. Deputy Governor of Bangkok Pol Lt Gen Sophon Pisuthiwong recently inspected the renovation process. Push buttons are also being installed at this location during the next two weeks and CCTV cameras within 30 days. -- © Copyright NNT 2022-02-07 - Aetna offers a range of visa-compliant plans that meet the minimum requirement of medical treatment, including COVID-19, up to THB 3m. Popular Post OneMoreFarang
When they do that then I suggest they should also remove those useless buildings near many junctions. Most seem to be unoccupied or maybe whoever is in there is sleeping. One way or another, they are useless! Or convert them to something useful like toilets or selling ice cream or something like that. 1

Geoffggi
A similar country wide plan should be implemented so the whole country knows what these crossings mean, otherwise when out of town visitors arrive they will not understand this rule applies to ALL THAIS & Foreigners alike. Benmart
Paint, lights signs...all ignored, all forgotten, continue the carnage.
khunjeff
Most of the crossings near me have had button-operated lights for years, but vehicles (especially motorcycles) just go through anyway, even when a large and very noticeable crowd of pedestrians is crossing. A couple of years ago they added the orange/red paint as well; that helped for a few days while the color was still bright, but after a week or so it was so dulled under traffic grime that it ceased to make much difference. swm59nj
This should have been done when all types of pedestrians were being harmed or their safety at risk.
Enzian
It was not a "tragic incident". It was a criminal act.
scorecard
What does 'with red backgrounds' mean? Has there been any official publication/information of what it means? Edited February 7, 2022 by scorecard
ourmanflint
Why can't they install Pelican crossings? or is that too complicated for Thai drivers to understand?
overt2016
How long will I have to wait till the crossing I use twice a day is repainted? At the moment it is a nice shade of grey which blends in well with the road.
