Handicapped "three legged tiger" responsible for series of attacks on people and livestock in Kanchanaburi

Wildlife authorities in western Thailand have identified the culprit after a series of attacks on people and livestock.

A three legged tiger.

Twenty camera traps were set up by the Freedom Foundation and one caught the handicapped tiger ripping apart a buffalo.

It is thought that the tiger's behaviour changed because it was unable to hunt animals in the wild due to its disability.

So it turned to ambushing people and livestock - unusual behaviour for a tiger.

Authorities fear more attacks and retaliation measures against the tiger population of the Khao Laem area of Kanchanaburi so it has been decided to attempt to capture the tiger and look after it in captivity.

The area has also been in in the news after five people were arrested for killing two tigers and BBQ-ing their meat.

They claimed they did it to protect herds but critics and animal experts believe they may have been after the pelts and body parts that can fetch 100,000s of baht.

A man was also attacked while tending his herd.

ASEAN NOW has been told by a Dutch animal rights activist that there are about 180 wild tigers in Thailand.

Thai Rath reported that the issue of some of these animals living close to human populations and herders in Thailand and creating conflict was becoming more prevalent.

Interesting that Jim Corbett who wrote Man Eaters Of Kumoan and hunted down many man eating tigers in India said that in every case there was some injury or ageing effect that prevented them hunting their usual prey - most often porcupine quills in the lower front legs.

Looks to me the poor animal was a victim of being trapped, that is probably how he lost his leg.

I hope they will be able to catch him and restore some of the peace.

I was there a few weekends ago camping in E-Tong/Pilok.

The tiger is the victim here, hopefully we will not hear about more tigers being killed over there.

I find it hard to believe in the attack there were three tigers, they usually hunt alone but maybe the

other two were big cubs?

I'd expect a good discount if sold a tiger skin rug with only three legs.

A case where a wild animal might be better off by being caught and taken care of in a zoo...????

Not with 3-legs.

Is it just now being known the tiger has 3 legs? None of the people attacked noticed that? Sure hope the cat can be caught and taken to a zoo.

I'm fairly certain the buffalo meat that picture shows was not killed by the tiger. Any tiger with three legs and an kill a buffalo deserves the meat.

A pair of slippers are still a viable option.

Not very PC calling it handicapped, how about disabled? it will be offended if it gets wind of it

It probably received it’s lost leg due to a human and is taking revenge.

Sorry, but this reminds me of a joke from way back: – "Col Wythington-Smythe, the well known big-game hunter whose motto was, "always shoot them between the eyes", was last night eaten by two one-eyed lions walking arm in arm".

I'll get my coat.............

I am pretty sure if I was attacked by a tiger I would only notice its teeth and claws.

I fear there will be no tigers in the wild in Thailand within 10 years. Too many people.

I read the same book, and you beat me to it!

I wish the man eaters were tranquilized so their feet can be cleared of quills, etc and given a 2nd chance tho
