I am nearing the end of my first 30 day visa and want to get a second one but the only way I know how to do it is from Bangkok and I am in Sisket now. So is there a boarder crossing in Udon that I can use to get a fresh 30 days or do I need to go to a bigger crossing point?

You do not have a visa. What you have is a 30 day visa exempt entry and you are allowed up to 90 days of this kind of entry per six month period. Am not sure if you are in Ubon or Udon. From Ubon the Mukdahan/Savannakhat crossing would be closer but from Udon the Nong Khai crossing would be best. You will need to pay for a visa for Laos at either point and should have money to show on return if requested. They could also require an outbound ticket within 30 days to allow you to return to Thailand but so far have not heard that these border points have been asking, yet.

Thanks for the clarification lopburi3, I suspected Mukdahan was my best bet but was hoping that there was something closer that wasn't showing up on my map since I am just a stones throw from Camodia.

I guess I make a run to Mukdahan next week and after that start looking for a more permanent solution.

Since I have a Thai wife for 8 months now and we have been running an informal business for the last year and half can you reccomend any law firm that can help me to make my business official and thus enable me to get a work visa?

Believe there is a post directly south of Surin but it looks like it would not be much closer unless you are in southern Ubon and don't know anything about it. The Cambodian crossings are also subject to onward ticket requirements and perhaps money check is more likely than Laos. If no answer here you might post in the Issan forum for local knowledge.

If you are in Sisaket, the nearest border for a 30 day stamp would be south of Surin a bit further than Kap Choeng where ther is also a fully working immigration office which might be able to convert your stamp into a proper visabut I am not sure about that. It would be good to drop in on your way and ask. They are very friendly.

The border should be not more than 150km from Sisaket
