ASEAN NOW suggests that the Bangkok Metropolitan Authority or BMA continue to adopt a softly- softly approach after alcohol restrictions were eased in the Thai capital.

 

Warnings far outweighed prosecutions when law breaking was found, it was revealed at the latest executive meeting chaired by deputy governor Sakonthee Phatthiyakul yesterday. 

 

Checks had been made by the police, military and BMA representatives  across all 50 of Bangkok's districts looking at places with SHA, SHA+ and other accreditation.

 

There were 15,840 checks, 650 warnings, 12 prosecutions and one solitary closure order.

 

In total 23 warnings were issued for serving booze after hours and 206 establishments were flouting SHA rules by serving alcohol. 

 

Action against people illegally using the sidewalks to ride on or park continued apace, however.

 

Since July 2018 there have been 40,480 cases dealt with. 3,830 resulted in warnings but the majority - nearly 35,000 resulted in fines.

 

Consequently the BMA has collected 44,238,000 baht from such infractions. 

 

A warning issued via the meeting suggested that people could be fined 2,000 baht for driving or parking on the sidewalk and the fine would be 5,000 baht if someone was hit, reported Daily News.
