Drink and drive motorists or motorcyclists caught by police during the long Songkran holiday, between Monday and Sunday, are more likely to be sent to jail without suspension if convicted, as authorities vow to get tough on drunk driving, traditionally one of the major causes of road accidents during the holidays.

Pol Maj-Gen Raveepan Amornmuneepong, deputy commissioner of Provincial Police Region 6, said yesterday that police recently discussed measures to discourage drunk driving with senior judicial and corrections officials. The measures include the court’s exercise of discretion when handing out suspended jail terms to those convicted of drunk driving.

All agreed that drunk driving must be dealt with decisively during the long holidays and that the courts should not suspend jail terms, he said.

Just ban the sale of alcohol leading up to and during the holiday period. That might upset the Pattaya pensioners but some of them could do with a dry out period. ????

I can name a few, as they just got a new one when the suspension was up and then continued on until stopped and arrested again.  It will never deter an alcoholic, and many unfortunately never are caught here and believe it makes them a better driver.

If convicted...

Can you imagine an Ignition Interlock system being mandated and enforced on drivers, who have been arrested and convicted and as a condition of their release and obtaining a license once again, to actually have one installed here on their cars or MC.

Irresponsible and selfish.  Book em.

First comes the police 'discretion' about handing out tickets.  The harsher the penalties, the greater the bribe; it's a win/win for the 'concerned' police.

Nope.

Only reason he copped jail time is he is a repeat offender.

but that is not the question I was replying to.

Could being the operative word...

unless pockets and connections deep enough

Just follow what works. Take Australia model. If driver is drunk, car goes into press. With 12 years of payments left on it, that's quite a harsh punishment...

Ever since this covid malarky came to town and the first sign of booze bans I now always have enough beer, wine and spirits in the storeroom to keep me lubricated for atleast 1 month.

but yes, a snap ban would catch out many.

In Aus they only crush repeat offenders.

Do banks here really give out car loans over 12 yr period ?

Say it ain't so! Many AseanNow contributors will tell you that everyone only wais and receives a 500 baht fine. And that is even more boring than the 'if you don't like it here then go back home' brigade. Thanks for confirming that people really do go to jail in Thailand. Must come as a shock to many.

In Nepal, automatic I month jail time for drink driving according to a taxi driver there.

The first loan my now ex-wife received was for 7 years and that was on an already 6 year old Mercedes she bought from a friend who was still making payments.........She bought it for 300k less then the friend had initially paid 6 years prior, what a joke on how much resold cars command here.  And so in essence the bank was getting 13 years of payments.  Stupid
