BANGKOK (NNT) - The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has said it expects at least 8 million international visitors to make their way to the Kingdom this year.

 

TAT Governor Yuthasak Supasorn attributed the positive outlook to a recent announcement from the Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA), asking relevant units to consider relaxing COVID restrictions for international travelers.

 

He explained that responsible agencies will take into consideration infection rates during the long Songkran holiday period and make proposals during the CCSA general meeting on April 22nd.

 

Officials are also currently looking at canceling the “Thailand Pass” system, along with the RT-PCR test requirement for international arrivals, possibly replacing it with the faster and more convenient antigen test.

 

Yuthasak added that the TAT may propose adjusting quarantine measures for high-risk individuals and remove the requirement for foreign visitors to have travel insurance. If approved, these adjustments could be implemented as soon as the start of May or June.

Citing TAT data, Yuthasak said there were about 444,000 international visitors during the first three months of the year, a 30% increase from the previous quarter, generating some 34 billion baht in revenue.

 

The second quarter of this year is meanwhile projected to see about 341,000 foreign visitors, bringing in at least 23 billion baht in revenue.

 

According to the TAT governor, the Ministry of Tourism and Sports expects to welcome 5-15 million international travelers in total this year. He also noted that if Thailand sees at least 5 million visitors during the first 9 months of 2022, at least another 3 million will likely follow.

 

Much could depend on whether China goes through with its plans to relax travel restrictions for its citizens beginning in October.

Visions of grandure and delusions spring to mind.  When the year ends can I sue him in court for promoting false information....

But their repertoire is so limited.

Selling more delusion to the Thai public. This place is propaganda on roids. 

I'd like to know how many people have come so far this year, this would be a good indicator. Sure, they will get more people in November and December if restrictions are truly lifted, but really curious regarding current results.

I have they have legalised marijuana but it seems some people in the TAT start using it well before...

So that's an average of 27,750 per day, each and every day.

 

Current run rate is, let's say, 11,000 per day.

 

So they're counting on ~ 4 million all arriving on 31 December right?

2-3 million is more realistic, but even that might not be reached.

At least they changed it to "visitors" from "tourists". Visitors include people transiting, people travelling for business, people returning to visit family.

I'm as sceptical as the next person on this thread, but at the same time, it seems reasonable to expect (IF they lift all Covid regulations) that something close to normal in the arrivals department will assert itself, no?

Close to Normal? Do you mean the pre-pandemic multi millions from 2018 and 2019? or the millions from the 80's and 90's

How many will come from Russia to avoid the coming draft?

I hope to be a billionair by the end of 2022...  It probably (most likely) will not happen ????

Lucky if they get 2 million even if they drop all incoming restrictions.  As stated in another post no plans to drop restrictions on bars, go-go, entertainment areas so tourists will visit countries where they can drink and have fun.

Fly to Thailand, PCR test on entry after spending 1-2 days of your holiday in a hotel jail, Wear a mask at the beach in 40 degree weather, put up with random bans and no nightlife.  Enjoy folks.

Your answer is in the OP, 444,000 came in first 3  months and they project 341,000 in the 2nd Quarter.

 

So that's 785,000 in first 6 months which leaves 7,215,000 to come in the last half of the year lol

Ha! If those in charge at all levels of government could be sued for false info...they'd been bankrupted and defunct LONG ago. Misleading and false info is their forte! They never go to work without it. ????

There really is no reason why tourist numbers should return to pre-Covid19 levels.  The vast majority of tourist businesses have been destroyed by strict lockdown measures (both in Thailand and overseas).  Here in Pattaya, there are row upon row of closed restaurants and massage shops and bars.  Do you think that these bankrupt businesses will suddenly come back to life?  I think not, and no-one wants to holiday in something that resembles Aleppo...

8m? - that's less than a quarter of pre-covid levels.

Sadly those with capital - big businesses may take up the space introducing a bland corporate nature to once varied and interesting towns.

Well if you divide these numbers from TAT using the usual BS filter then Thailand is really stuffed.
