20K fine and two years in jail - police warn public not to step out of line at Songkran

So, yesterday AOT announced that there will be 1 million coming to

Thailand this Songkran (11/17 april). And today (in this news thread)

they are warning people to have fun, at a water festival!

Who are those people, that do not have a clue about how people go

on about in their lifes. Sorry, my fault, I thought I was somewhere else.

                         I wish!

                                        Cheers!

This is just such harsh authoritarianism.    Draconian, not based in any law.   Meanwhile, the roads are of course as bloody as ever ????????????????

Spray someone with water and risk a 20,000 baht fine and 2 years in Jail.    Drive while absolutely hammered and face a few points on your licence and risk the same fine but without the jail

He said there was a ban on organized water fights, foam and soapie Songkran style parties.
Yingyot warned violators that they could fall foul of Article 51 meaning up to 20,000 baht in fines or even Article 18 - prison for two years.

And from another report:
Despite the ban, however, many foreign tourists continued to play with water guns, without maintaining any social distancing. Most of them did not wear facemasks.

Right. How many arrests have been made? I guess none, as none have been reported. Which is exactly what everyone expects, which is why the rules are ignored. More hot air and threats that are totally meaningless. In Thailand people - Thais and foreigners alike - do exactly what they want to do as they know there is close to zero chance of the police or anyone else enforcing anything.

Probably more fun being had for songkran in Yangon right now.

Don't forget your b????????ster!!!!!

Article 51.  Article 18,  hot air Article applied to scare since like usage no one around to enforced. Honor system boys doesn't work!

Breathing out of sync, 5 million baht fine and 10 years in prison.

You just KNOW he's laughing behind that mask. NOBODY could report this with a straigh face.

Yes,just a further illustration of the lack of critical thinking (probably IQ too) prevalent with officialdom. Do nothing effective to address the far greater and ongoing consequences of 25,000 road deaths (plus one million injuries), but chest thump and hysterically threaten jail/huge fines over infringement of water activities.
The Thai 'Thick Gene' ???? raises its none to bright head again. ????

Oh Dear !!! Looks like I'll be behind bars until I die then cause I break lotsa rules lol ????????????

What's COVID?

Two years in jail lol.

A maximum penalty, not mandatory and, so far, no one has received that punishment.  LO 'kin L.

Murder often nets less time.

"Murder often nets less time".

Got a couple of examples of those sentences of less than two years that are "often" given for murder?

now, who'll be the first one (farang?) to be thrown in the slammer for 2 yrs?

Based on the legally enforceable emergency decree that is still in force.

Blah blah blah crackdown

Blah blah blah huge fine

Blah blah blah prison

Blah blah blah same old drivel

Blah blah blah same message again next year

Hardly.  Drink driving punishments in Thailand go to a maximum of 10 years imprisonment and B200,000 fine.

fine all stories selling such "illegal" objects.......100,000 baht per offense.

Selling them is not illegal.

Pool parties at some of the big hotels on Sukhumvit are going full steam ahead.

So why not cancel Songkran all together and be done with that? and with Songran cancelled, the penalty can be even bigger and a 100 years jail for people who just want to unwind and celebrate a holiday like they couldn't do for 2 years I wonder if this is the general's own idea or an order from way above?...

So why not just obey the law, it's based on the Covid problem or have you forgotten?, current deaths 100 per day.

As usual total lack of judgement ! Are you sure the death penalty would not be more appropriate ?? Hahaha

I would think that all the prisons are full and the country's finance is booming again from what i see on the other story

The fine amount seems to change hourly.

And two years in jail?

Sheesh, which thai laws are they applying here?

They could have shut this down last night, but they made a conscious decision not to do so. Now it's a hair on fire problem? Strange people.

Tonight...

Thailand used to be the Land of Smiles  and Sanuk = Fun. If they keep  threatening people with huge fines/jail and actually do it they will never see 2 million plus tourists a year. people will go somewhere  that doesnt seem like a penal colony.

Well! Let’s put that in a realistic perspective… there are:

~ 230,000 Royal Thai Police

and

~ 70,000,000 Thai

That’s roughly 300 Thai for 1 policeman !

Or:

assuming they arrest people, and only 0.14%  of the 70 million Thai would say:

Okay, put me into jail, I won’t pay the 20,000 baht fine!
- - - Really? You have space for 100,000 more prisoners?

(… even, when  leaving the necessary number of judges for 100,000 court procedures out of the equation. ????)

I think a judge will give the sentence and not a policeman

and how many deaths in traffic every day??? and how many of the Covid patients are on a certain age with underlying diseases??? Maybe they would die anyway this year... with or without Covid

Thainess 101, blame the tourist,  no Thai's could be involved.

No Sonkran in Myanmar

even if different areas have their own spin on what is acceptable."

Erm? Why? Because the hierarchy haven't got the balls to make the decisions for themselves, so they pass the buck down the line causing utter confusion along the way, leaving the "rules" open to misinterpretation, and hefty fines if plod on the street feels like he wants lobster for dinner on Sunday!
