Thailand’s Center for Medical Genomics (CMG) at Ramathibodi hospital has issued a warning about a new Omicron sub-variant, BA.2.12.1, which is becoming more prevalent in the US, accounting for roughly 20% of all new cases across America, and believed to be highly contagious.

Citing a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued on Tuesday, the CMG said that BA.2.12.1 is estimated to be 23% to 27% more transmissible than its predecessor BA.2 and is fuelling a resurgence in COVID cases in upstate New York.

The CMG warned, in its Facebook post on Wednesday that, although BA.1 has almost disappeared and BA.2 cases are slowing in Thailand, attention should be shifted to BA.2.12, which is already spreading in Thailand and may mutate into BA.2.12.1, as detected in upstate New York.

Knowing Thailand usual stop/block first think later reaction once they'll get a knowledge of it they might just make things worse for all of us and those wanting to come in, actually, today is when the parties concern will get together to ponder easing the entry restrictions....

OMG!! New scary strain!!!

Yes perhaps it will force the government to ban people from the streets during the next election and voters will only be able to vote if taken by government sponsored transport protected by armed military personal, for their own protection of course.  Naturally there will only be able to have one ballot box in any one voting station to prevent the spread of this new super duper virus strain.

What this article fails to inform is that actual deaths are falling.....The sub-variant may be more contagious but not as deadly.

It seems like the corona virus and its variants are becoming more and more like the common flu.

Why lie to people? If you can't tell the truth, just don't post.

I'm tired of hearing of new strains every 2 months or so.

It's time we move on. Get vaccinated, observe self hygiene, don't expose yourself in overly-crowded places if you don't have to and wear masks until there is no more spread.

This is an airborne virus for the most part, so the mask is essential.

It's time we handle this like any other flu that we used to get every year before the covid outbreak.

Get vaccinated, including a booster dose. Take precautions.

There will be a time we will be able to socialize and carry on without wearing masks soon.

This outbreak thought me one thing - to appreciate the freedom we had before and not take anything for granted.

As the article was regarding a variant in New York/US, I had interpreted that was to what he was referring. Sure we are all very aware of 2022 peak in deaths in Thailand/Asia, being as we appear to be 2-3 months ‘behind’ the US/Europe in our Omicron wave timing. The data coming out of US/Europe post-Omicron wave gives me hope that we will shortly we moving out of the worst of it.

I am also encouraged to see that world daily deaths are essentially at the lowest level since the start of the pandemic.

For anyone who hasn't caught on by now... the coronavirus outbreaks come in waves, waves up and waves down...

Right now, in the United States (which, BTW, is closing in on 1 million official COVID deaths since the outset), what had been a downward trend in cases and hospitalizations are now upward trends for both..... Deaths are still trending down, but deaths are a lagging indicator that usually later follows trends in cases and hospitalizations.

From the U.S. CDC:

Reported Cases

As of April 20, 2022, the current 7-day moving average of daily new cases (42,605) increased 35.3% compared with the previous 7-day moving average (31,495).

New Hospital Admissions

The current 7-day daily average for April 13–19, 2022, was 1,582. This is an 8.2% increase from the prior 7-day average (1,463) from April 6–12, 2022.

Deaths

The current 7-day moving average of new deaths (376) has decreased 9.4% compared with the previous 7-day moving average (415). As of April 20, 2022, a total of 987,601 COVID-19 deaths have been reported in the United States.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/covid-data/covidview/index.html

And, BTW, Thailand on Saturday/today once again tied its year-high record with another day of 129 new COVID deaths, the third time in the past week the country has had that daily COVID death toll.  And that number is about double the average number of road deaths the country has every day, by comparison.

Thailand is now in 9th position as for cases in the last 7 days, just behind the UK (8th), and well ahead, in numbers, of Vietnam (10th position).

Worlwide trend is 'down' now, but numbers in the West (U.S., Canada, Spain, Finland) seem to climb again.
