Thailand on Friday (April 22) reported 21,808 new COVID-19 cases, 19,826 recoveries and 128 additional deaths over the past 24 hours.

Friday’s cases bring the total number of COVID-19 infections in Thailand to 4,128,038 with 27,520 deaths.

The news comes as Thailand’s Center for Medical Genomics (CMG) at Ramathibodi hospital has issued a warning about a new Omicron sub-variant, BA.2.12.1, which is becoming more prevalent in the US, accounting for roughly 20% of all new cases across America, and believed to be highly contagious.

Citing a report by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), issued on Tuesday, the CMG said that BA.2.12.1 is estimated to be 23% to 27% more transmissible than its predecessor BA.2 and is fuelling a resurgence in COVID cases in upstate New York.**

WHO weekly update from 20th April:

Although the number of seriously ill COVID-19 cases remains lower than the peak in August 2021, both severe and ventilated cases have been steadily climbing, with ventilated cases increasing faster and just 23% below their highest ever reported levels of August 2021. Despite these increases, there remains capacity in the healthcare system to admit patients. The policy of not confirming by PCR testing for all probable cases, as well as the widespread use of rapid antigen tests (including those available 'over the counter' that may not be reported), continues to make it difficult to monitor the situation accurately. However, from the data reported, the increasing transmissibility of the Omicron variant is clear, with nearly half (49%, 1.8 million) of all COVID cases (4 million) in Thailand reported in the last 4-months from 1 January 2022, which was the time when the Omicron variant started to dominate circulation.

Although it's not reflected on the WHO chart dated thru April 20 that's using 7-day average numbers, actually, the official daily numbers of serious COVID hospitalizations have been declining daily for the past 4 days since reaching the year high of 2,123 on April 18.

As of this hour, it looks like MoPH has failed, for some reason, to update today's numbers for serious hospitalizations and intubations on their daily dashboard report. (The current version as of this moment is still showing yesterday's numbers, even though the rest of the data shown has been updated for today). So I'll post today's dashboard image without the incorrect/out-of-date data from yesterday. Hopefully they'll get around to fixing and updating that info at some point.

PS - they never did end up updating the dashboard report for today with the correct serious hospitalizations and intubations data...  But they did later report it elsewhere, as follows:

Maybe someone's been air-heading again but in the middle of this widely circulated recent report the following appears :

"Chakkarat is more concerned about the elderly. He says there’s a risk the younger age groups could have passed the virus on to elderly relatives during the holiday, adding that around 55% of people in high-risk groups are not vaccinated at all."

If true, then that's awful.  It would make a total mockery of vaccination, especially where Omicron is concerned since it primarily affects the people mentioned, and not the ones presumably well vaccinated already and indeed at little intrinsic risk regardless.

Everybody going to get covid some point. Many people going to get it many times. Just was news that some nurse in UK get covid second time after 3 weeks from first infection. Ofcourse many country is in different situation about pandemic but in Europe almost all is like before covid. Nobody has ever force you to wear mask in here but now they have take off to even recommendation to use it. Finnair goign to trop off mask use in their flights starting from next monday, only need use if arrival country demand it. Fact is that we need to start live whit covid not hide. Life must go on, sadly its going to take some casualtys from people who have some kind illnesses or from older folks. I have zero sympathy to people who not take vaccines and those people cant keep other people hostage. Yes some coutrys has failed to deliver vaccines to all citizens or dont have enough money to deliver but hole world cant wait those countrys and stick head in bush!

I'm not sure just who he's including in the definition of high risk..

But the group we usually start with in such discussions is the senior citizen age 60 and up population. And among those, 60% have yet to receive a third dose booster shot that's needed with Omicron.

The non-boosted share among the general population is even higher, at about 64%.
