My sister in law had a stroke in the apartment she was staying in whilst looking after her grandson in Bangkok. Apparently someone heard her crying out but did nothing because they thought she was being hit by her husband. She was on her own so she didn't get help until a neighbour she knew realised something was wrong. She was taken to hospital but never recovered. She was 52.

 

Given that sometimes people do need help I hope I would help as this woman did.

 

Actually whilst typing this I remember about 3 years ago at night on a major road into Mahasarakham I was with my wife and her daughter and we saw a man lying in the bike lane but it was too late to stop so we did 2 u turns and as we were arriving we saw anther vehicle stop but then it drove off. I got out to look and he was lying on his back with his hat a few feet away and some food bags in his hand. I couldn't smell alcohol. My wife phoned for an ambulance but they said one was already coming. I guessed this was probably called by whoever was in the other vehicle that stopped. The ambulance arrived and looked him over and he seemed better by then. He lived down the road and he always came to the nearby market just before it closed to get food for his dogs which was what he was carrying. I've no idea what had happened but I don't think he was drunk so maybe he just tripped.

 

If either of those were people that you knew would you rather they were ignored. I understand the problems that can come from helping but that isn't always the case.

A questionable comment at that.

Real unfortunate what happened with this woman but there are several other example of when people stop and saved others from imminent death including me when I had a head on collision with a truck and was saved due to good samaritans intervention. Also remember you or someone you love may need help and that time you would expect people to stop and help so keep doing what is right. Good Karma always multiply...telling you from experience.

True.  The "don't get involved with other people's business" attitude so common in Thailand is not solely about being chilled out.  It's to protect people from liability, blame and psychopaths.

Presumably "fixing" the police would mean an end to any corruption that they facilitate.  Do you think the Thai populace would be happy with that?  How long would it take for people and businesses to adapt?

 

Of particular interest would be how the Thai people would deal with suddenly facing the consequences of their actions and being lumbered with considerable fines, criminal records that leave them unable to work, and the loss of many people's driving licences almost instantly. ????

Accidents yes, you can observe the situation and call for help..

As for confrontations stay well away.

In the first example it was assumed to be a confrontation but wasn't. 

Also a confrontation can end up in serious injury or death,  possibly murder. 

You can always call the police of course. I've no experience of what they would do but there's no harm in trying.

I wonder if those saying "mind your own business" will have the same feeling if/when they're in need of help.

I think I would find it very hard to ride by a lone person who was obviously in some difficulty. There are times when you may have to think of someone else before yourself.

Depending on the size of the cans that could be 2 or 3 liters of beer. Non alcoholics can get very drunk from that.
