The Ministry of Health says it has stepped up the drive against the sale of fake, substandard and expired medicines across the country. Ministry of Health spokeswoman Or Vandine said on Friday that people’s health was at risk from poor quality medicines. “Some of the shops have been ordered to close or stop selling fake or expired medicines as this puts people’s health at risk,” she said.

“The ministry has been working very closely with the police to search and monitor pharmacies to see whether the medicines lack quality,” she added. She pointed out that medical stocks need to be good and checked by the Ministry before they are sold to the consumers. She added some retailers have avoided the process and sell medicines without approval.

Most of the time, the Ministry urged retailers not to sell substandard products and the general public were told not to buy them, she said and emphasised that health was a priority.
