People who smoke cannabis or hemp in public are warned that they may face a 3-month jail term and/or a maximum fine of 25,000 baht, if they are convicted of causing a nuisance with the smoke or smell, as a new regulation from the Ministry of Public Health comes into effect today (Wednesday).

Director-general of the Department of Health Dr. Suwanchai Wattanayingcharoenchai said that the regulation, which was published in the Royal Gazette on Tuesday, is intended to prevent the recreational use of cannabis or hemp in a way that causes a nuisance or health risk to other people.

He said that the molecules in cannabis or hemp smoke can be inhaled and may cause lung disease, asthma or bronchitis in other people, especially in children, pregnant women, breast-feeding mothers and people suffering from depression or schizophrenia.

what about cigarette smoke which is as offensive as ganja smoke?

why single the one out?

Plain overreaction and doesn't make sense. It's just plain way of warning users not to smoke in public,

and not because of smell, but because of "danger" to public morality, as by conservative standards.

At the same time drinking alcohol in public is not restricted in thailand (it is in some countries, including in europe).

I posted a google translation of yesterday's announcement in the Royal Gazette above. It is just an assertion without citing any sources that ganja smoke is a nuisance and can be harmful.  It seems to stop short of banning it or prescribing any penalties.  Presumably more ministerial regulations are on the way. Seems that Anutin was desperate to just get cannabis out of the Narcotics Act, as he pledged in his electoral campaign, before the government steps down or collapses. The details were left till later and they are only just getting round to that under public pressure.
