Can I use this when saying I am totally thrilled with something but not in a sexual way?

What would be the best way to say - "I really am thrilled" for example, if my wife gives me a present and says that I don't like it but I really do?

สยิว sà-yĭw not just for the sexual way. for example when you talking something that you fear like when you san an accident or ghots your hair stand up that we called sà-yĭw

but they also have for a word for sexual way called " sa'-yiw-kiw" สยิวกิ้ว

my english is not so good sorry if make you more confused

I think it means to feel a rush of excitement more than to be thrilled as in Neeranam's example. Really what he's saying here is that he's very happy/pleased and I don't think it would be used in that situation.

However, other than ดีใจมาก I don't really have any other suggestions.

No, it means a sensual feeling as in 'horny'.

Incidentally, this appears to be spelt ปิติ rather than ปีติ on thai2english.com. Unless that's a different word.

Perhaps a native speaker could check this. BambinA didn't seem to like the other example I found in this book the other day.

สยิว indicates a thrill (good or bad) of a sudden and ephemeral type. I dont think there is a good english word to describe this sensation.

I ain't no Thai linguist but is this the same seeow that means sensitive.......and can be used with seeow chukajee to mean ticklish?

Sorry can't be bothered to look up chukajee and write the Thai.....I thought it was more a sort of seeow sound actually which doesn't fit with ???? which reads more sayeeuw but maybe I didn't listen properly

That's a very good description of it's use in this case. I remember going up to Doi Suthep years ago with an ex-girlfriend and her 12 year old daughter. When we were standing at the lookout point viewing down at the city I heard her daughter say สยิว. Since I was used to that term the way the girlfriend used it , I figured obviously it had another meaning and the above was a similar explanation she gave me.

It's in my students dictionary and although I can't figure it out it seems to be just another feeling, cold, hot, entering the heart, etc but I will wait to hear it used.

the other word you are thinking of is เสียว and yes, seeow is a reasonable representation of its sound (low rising tone). it can mean something like sensitive, for example "เสียวฟัน!" is something you might say in response to someone scraping their fingernails down a blackboard...something like "aagh that makes my teeth hurt!". it can describe a feeling of fear (eg. of heights) and can also mean sexually excited, turned on etc.

in my experience เสียว crops up a lot more than สยิว, but now i know the latter word (from reading this thread), perhaps i'll hear and see it everywhere!

Showed it to my Thai hubby and got a bit of a frown, like "what the heck are you reading on ThaiVisa???" So, I asked, "is it sexual?" and he said yes, always

Presumably then เสียว and สยิว are not the same. I think one ore two of us at least can confidently say we have heard the first being used in a non sexual situation. Could you ask your husband about this?

Well, maybe hubby is a bit of a prude Showed it to our cook and she says it is often sexual but doesn't have to be and brings up the teeth thing too.

So perhaps its age related? Not sure, hubby is over 10 years older than our cook and grew up in a much more conservative time than hers.

thrilled - very pleased and excited. If we translate it literally to Thai, then it should be "ตื่นเต้นและยินดีเป็นอย่างยิ่ง" But for expressing the feeling like this example, I think 'ปลื้ม' or 'เป็นปลื้ม' can be used in this situation. e.g. " ผม(เป็น)ปลื้มกับของขวัญที่คุณให้ผมมากเลย"

However, we Thai people might say something different like 'ว้าว เจ๋งจัง ผมชอบมากเลย' - Wow, it's cool. I really like it.

ปิติ or ปีติ means ปลื้มใจ or ดีใจ. It's mostly used in written language or formal speaking.

สยิว means รู้สึกเสียวซ่าน ( to feel a thrilling sensation in sexual way)or รู้สึกวาบหวาม( to thrill with fear but sometimes can be used in sexual way too)

For examples;

ภาพชุดสุดสยิว - porno pictures collection. or just a collection of pictures of girl in bikini.

เวลาเห็นหนอนยั้ยเยี้ยอย่างงี้ รู้สึกสยิวยังไงไม่รู้ ขนลุกหมดเลย - when I see a lot of worms like this, I thrill with fear and have goose fresh (hmmm..what is the better English word for this expression?).

นี่คุณ อย่ามาลูบขาผมนะ มันสยิว (imagine that if you are a guy and your male friend caress on your femur, you would feel it's not right and feel fear with his action. )

Thank's for the help with Thai. The English is 'goose-flesh' In my house we always said 'goose-bumps' or 'goose-pimples' and it is used when your skin actually resembles the skin of a plucked goose.

Interesting discussion. My guess is that these are etymologically the same word, and my intuition is that สยิว is derived from เสียว. This is supported by the fact that, at a glance, เสียว is in RID 1950, but สยิว isn't. Both are in RID 1982 and RID 1999. Of course, that's not very conclusive.

Searching on Google, เสียว is the more common word with 1.26 million hits, versus 209,000 for สยิว.

The meaning of a sexually pleasurable physical sensation is possible with both, but I think it's perhaps more common with สยิว. There are very common non-sexual usages of เสียว, such as เสียวฟัน--the feeling of a sharp or shooting pain in the teeth, and after experiencing a frightening situation, carrying a meaning of something like, "that gave me a shock!"

That said, though, the top results on Google for both เสียว and สยิว are sexually oriented. In this context, it means something like "arousing" or "aroused," depending on how it's used in the sentence.

As to the meaning of สยิว and เสียว, I don't know whether สยิว is derived from เสียว or not, but the meaning and the usage of both words are different.

According to Dr. Wit Thiengburanathum' dictionary ;

เสียว (seow)

(ก.) เกิดอาการที่ทำให้ขนลุก, รู้สึกแปลบ, รู้สึกวาบในหัวใจด้วยความกำหนัด, ความกลัวหรือความเจ็บ. v. to feel a sudden pain, to get a sharp sudden sensation, to feel a darting pain, to be in fear.

สยิว (สะ-หฺยิว) (sa-yiew)

(ก.) รู้สึกเสียวซ่าน, รู้สึกวาบหวาม. v. to feel a sense of thrilling.

When use both words in the sexual sensation, the feeling of each words is different. I don't think I have to get into details.
