Biden calls migration a 'hemispheric challenge' in meeting with Mexican president

WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden on Tuesday called migration a shared "hemispheric challenge" in a meeting with Mexico's leader, his latest effort to recast illegal immigration as a regional responsibility as he faces political attacks from Republicans over his handling of the border.

The two leaders also will work together to make infrastructure investments at the border and disrupt drug smuggling, Biden said.

The meeting at the White House comes a month after Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador skipped the U.S.-hosted Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles to protest Biden's decision to exclude the leftist governments of Cuba, Venezuela and Nicaragua.

I wonder what the the First Lady was  thinking when she said this,

WASHINGTON, July 12 (Reuters) - U.S. first lady Jill Biden, whose attempt to compliment Latinos flopped on Monday when she said they were as unique as "breakfast tacos," issued an apology for the remarks that prompted criticism from across the political spectrum.

No kidding. The illegal problem has gotten much worse under Uncle Joe.   Nearly 2 million last year alone. Not to mention the mysterious midnight flights around the country, carrying planeloads of illegal aliens to destinations unknown.

One of the more basic requirements for a nation to exist is to have borders. It seems that Joe and the left of his party don't want those. They would rather have cheap labor available to water their lawns and clean their toilets.

Oh, so it’s the demand by the Left for domestic staff that’s driving immigration from south of the border?

The various US industries aren’t employing any in documented workers?

Nothing happening south of the border is driving people to seek a better life?

Little bit of everything really. Farms and businesses demand cheap labor too.  I blame the left because they are the ones who trumpet about this issue and make noise, try their usual emotional arguments, etc. Trump for his faults at least tried to solve the problem. The current administration is making a total hash of it. And you can see that reflected in the plummeting support for the Democrats in the Hispanic community.

There needs to be enforcement at the border of course, but also people who employ illegals need to be punished.  Nothing drives down wages for American citizens faster than competition from people who are underpaid and exploited.

Frankly I don't care what is happening south of the border.  That is no reason to break into another country.  These people are not refugees by any stretch of the imagination. They are seeking a better economic situation. So, they can apply for visas at US embassys/consulates just like everyone else.

You need to revisit the history of migration to America.

It’s got nothing to do with US Left/Right and everything to do with push/pull.

Poverty, war, corruption, climate change are all pushers.

The ‘American Dream’ is a powerful pull.

Any American who’s job/income is seriously challenged by an undocumented immigrant, who lacks social connections, probably doesn’t speak English and almost only low skilled Labour to offer has bigger problems than immigration to worry about.

The people most adversely effected by illegal immigration tend to be BIPOC people, those without education, single parents, service industry workers, etc. In other words, vulnerable people. The artificial pressure put on wages by competition from illegal immigrants hurts them.

Hence the need for a strong border and aggressive enforcement of labor laws.
