A grim scene

The South African Police Service said its officers were called to the Enyobeni Tavern in Scenery Park, a suburb on the edge of East London in Eastern Cape province, on June 26 at around 4 a.m. local time. Upon arrival, they discovered 17 teens dead inside the club. Four more died when they were hospitalized or being transported to hospitals.

Initial reports stated the death toll was 22.

Police said the victims ranged in age from 13 to 17 -- all under South Africa's legal drinking age of 18.

The local government, the Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, offered burial assistance to the victims' families. A mass funeral was held July 6.  Read More

The word "dysfunctional" seems to be paired to so much in South Africa lately.

Is fundamental police work beyond them?

If their social and economic policies result in uncontrolled lawlessness the result will be bad for all of them.

It will be authoritarian government of some sort to put an end to the anarchy and ultraviolence.

it was not alcohol, but some gas container thrown inside and exit doors blocked.

That would be not just tear or pepper, but fast acting nerve gas, they couldn't get to some other back door entrances or brake glass windows.

They should not bury bodies before laboratory results are known. Investigation is not finished  even if autopsy is done.

That looks like a mass murder

yes .... it doesn't seem to reflect alcohol poisoning as they appeared to have all died very suddenly.

Hence,   the only other logical explanation would be a poisonous gas present in the room ...

I don't want to go all conspiratorial on this, but it's a rather strange and tragic situation.  I can't think of anything that is that fast acting and not leaving a trace that is easy to get.  I hope this wasn't just a test run for something big.

This is a very sad situation for the family and friends.
