FTI indicates southern region prime site for port development

The Federation of Thai Industries, Phang-Nga Chapter is organizing a study of port development along the southwestern coast of Thailand.

The Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, Phang-Nga Chapter, Mr. Warachat Nangpol (วระชาติ ทนังผล), revealed that Thailand is ready in its strategic economic development plan in order to become the commerce gateway of the world through the development of the southern region in order to attract new investment and technology from throughout the world. Provinces slated for development include Nakhon Si Thammarat, Krabi, Phang-Nga, and Phuket. Officials are placing particular emphasis on increasing industrial production, petroleum industry development, the establishment of industrial estates, and social and environmental preservation.

The Chairman of the Federation of Thai Industries, Phang-Nga Chapter reports that Phang-Nga province is an excellent site for deep water ports and is ready to serve as a commerce gateway for the world. Officials hope to systematically integrate energy production facilities, telecommunications infrastructure, waste management systems, and an industrial estate into the port project. The project will be proposed to the government promptly.

Far more likely that such a thing would be done further south .... in a carrot and stick approach dealing with the insurgency

My wife and I had a meeting at the Planning (?) Dept. on Phuket Island about this, approx 2 years ago. We wanted to find out about the General Plan for Phang Nga bay and the surrounding areas.

We did see the plans for this major project. They were talking about dredging out parts of the bay for a deep sea port.

Apparently this is still talk. Any progress since June 2007?
