A joint report, by the Thai NGO Internet Law Reform Dialogue (iLaw), Digital Reach and The Citizen Lab, claims that the use of the invasive Israeli Pegasus spyware on the devices of prominent individuals leading Thailand’s mass pro-democracy protests, calling for major reform, as well as academics and human rights defenders, who have publicly criticised the Thai government, spanned 2020 and 2021.

Amnesty International has called for the Thai government to investigate the use of the spyware, saying in a statement issued today (Monday) that the “Thai authorities must launch an independent, prompt, thorough and effective investigation into the use of Pegasus spyware and take necessary measures to foster a safe environment for civic engagement.”

“Such measures must include the amendments to legislation enabling state surveillance, including the Computer Crimes Act, the Cybersecurity Act and the National Intelligence Act,in line with international human rights law, as well as the implementation of safeguards to protect the right to privacy and freedom of expression, association and peaceful assembly,” it added.

????

Pegasus is hacking software, or spyware, developed, marketed and licensed to governments around the world by an Israeli company, the NSO Group.

"Yep, that was us." Investigation concluded.

More folder for the upcoming parliamentary hearings to remove Prayut and Co.

Is a "probe" really needed? We know who paid for it.

What good will that do ? do they really think this Thai government will admit to hacking phones ?

Sure they will admit it, at the trials to convict the protestors of all of the charges they will have to disclose the evidence obtained, or let them walk......which do you think it will be.

Hardly surprising from the Muppet usurpers of democracy.

Pegasus is not cheap. To infect this number of people and then pay for the continued monitoring will run into millions of $$$ ????????????

They may disclose some evidence but not all. Remember this is Thailand run by ??? so all judges are bought and paid for, all and firm evidence is an ancillary matter which may or may not have a bearing on the judge's decision

The open democracies use it more than dictatorships and autocratic rulers?

I'm fully aware of the surveillance that happens in the west but how does that link prove what the poster claimed which was:

"Rather commonplace the world, actually.

OK, so in who's hands is the Pegasus? USA ? They already did once in EU.

Or China? Maybe Poetin? Or just a bunch of CEO's of companies? Or even Israel itself?

Of course, Thai military is using such spyware. No surprise there. But ‘an independent, prompt, thorough and effective investigation”? When has that EVER happened in Thailand? Fox in the henhouse…
