Pol Lt-Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat told Daily News about the new points deduction system for drivers and other issues related to serious infractions on the Thai Roads.

 

Drunk drivers will face two years in jail and fines of 50-100,000 baht fines on committing a second offence within two years of the first. 

 

Baseline fines are being changed from 1,000 baht to 4,000 baht from September.

 

The issue of car seats and restraints for children under 6 is still being discussed. 

 

Regarding the points system drivers who lose all their points will have their licence suspended initially for 9 months. 

 

It comes in on January 9th 2023 when everyone will get 12 points. 

 

From one to four points can be deducted depending on the severity of the offence. 

 

It's one point for speeding, ignoring a Zebra crossing, not wearing a helmet or seatbelt or using a phone while driving.

 

Two points is for going through red lights or going the wrong way.

 

Three points is for street racers.

 

Four points is for drunk drivers.

 

After the 12 points are exhausted the driver is banned for three months and the points are only restored after one year.

Just another empty threat. Not having a valid license is unlikely to stop many Thai  people from driving.

Points System For Traffic Offences Coming; But What About Enforcement?

In early 2023, Thailand’s Royal Thai Police will launch a traffic points system aimed at improving driving discipline and to curb road accidents. 

 

Although efforts to improve Thailand’s horrendous road toll are to be applauded, there remains a need for  the enforcement of traffic regulations, including the legal requirement for motor cycle riders to wear a helmet.

 

Starting January 9th next year, every driver will be given 12 points, which will be reduced if they violate traffic rules, according to Highway Police Division chief Pol Maj Gen Ekkarat Limsangkat.  He says ‘’disruptive driving behaviours’’, such as speeding, failing to stop at zebra crossings and not fastening a seatbelt, can lead to a one-point deduction.

 

Two points will be taken away for running red lights or driving in the wrong direction on one-way streets, while three points will be taken away for illegal racing on public streets.  Serious violations such as drunk driving carry a maximum penalty of four points.

 

A driver who loses all 12 points will have their licence suspended for 90 days, and the deducted points will be restored 12 months after they are removed.

 

Earlier this month, a new regulation resulting in an automatic 90-day suspension of driving licenses took effect.  Such suspensions would apply for violations that pose a serious risk of danger to the public. This might be when violators attempt to flee after causing damage to others or public property during a road accident.

 

Driving without a license could result in a three-month jail term and a fine of 10,000 baht.

He also said that the prison term for repeat offenders caught driving under the influence has been increased to two years, with the fine raised from 50,000 baht to 100,000 baht.

4 points deduction for drink driving????

should be automatic 1 year ban and 1 month prison.

So the cops are going to start pro-actively policing the roads.?

 

Just down the main road from my office there is a big old shady tree where the cops wait to nab and fine people who are driving in the outside lane, ostensibly to get in lane to turn right to make a U-turn at the traffic lights, another 200 meters away.

At these traffic lights, the usual suspects run red lights, make illegals turns etc, but the cops can't be arsed re-locating from their shady parking spot to catch them.. ???? And thus is why nothing really changes here..

or keep your points with paying a 200 THB fine.... The deduction of points is very low and driving at wrong side of the highway is allowed?? And whta if you don't have a driverslicense or your driverslicense is suspended and you still drive around.. and how about overloaded trucks and pick ups???   It is not gonna work...

I wonder if it will stop all the Farangs drink driving in Pattaya, somehow I doubt it.

Bar owners would go broke if there was strict drink driving enforcement, most Farangs I know drink and drive on a regular basis, of course none will be members here, they never are. 

Wow, so you have to get caught drunk driving 4 times (assuming you can't pay off the cop that caught you, otherwise more than 4) before you lose your licence.

 

Sounds like these 12 points are going to be pretty hard to lose but I'm sure drivers will be doing their best up and down the country ????.

First you have to catch the offenders before administering this mild deterrent.  I actually viewed half a dozen of Pattaya's invisible police force yesterday setting up a check point.  Played table tennis for one hour by which time they'd gone!

Police to Launch Point-Deduction System for Traffic Violations

BANGKOK (NNT) - After increasing penalties for traffic violations, the Royal Thai Police have said they intend to implement a so-called traffic point-cutting system at the beginning of next year, a form of electronic traffic ticketing designed to improve driving discipline and reduce road accidents.

 

According to Pol Maj Gen Ekkarat Limsangkat, chief of the Highway Police Division, beginning January 9, 2023, every driver’s license holder will be assigned 12 points, which will then be deducted for violations of traffic laws.

 

Pol Maj Gen Ekkarat said infractions that can result in a one-point deduction include exceeding the speed limit, failing to stop for pedestrians at zebra crossings, not wearing a safety helmet, not fastening one’s seat belt, and talking on the phone while driving.

 

Drivers who run red lights or intentionally drive in the wrong direction will lose two points, while illegal street racing will lose three points. Four points are the maximum penalty for serious violations such as drunk driving,

 

The chief of the Highway Police Division said losing all 12 points would result in a 90-day suspension of the driver’s license, with the deducted points to be reinstated 12 months after their removal.

Another policing job that will never get done

Increasing the severity of punishment will never deter crime. When someone breaks the law the only thing in their mind is that they'll never get caught.

Yes, I remember many years ago I was drinking in one of the small bars on Thappraya Road in Jomtien, across the road from La Bocca. There was a drunk Norwegian guy having fun in the bar and spending money like it was water. He eventually decided it was time to go home, paid his bill and then promptly fell down the two steps to get from the bar to the pavement outside. People rushed over to help him up and dust him off, and told him that he should take a taxi back home, not drive. But he was having none of that, he got into his Toyota Fortuner, saying that he was much safer on four wheels than on two legs, after all he could hardly fall over in his SUV, and drove off. Crazy. 

Sorry. I do not believe anything. As long the do not extinct corruption, nothing will change.

How are these clowns going to manage the data and info - pencil, eraser and a used notepad? I thought govt depts are clogged up with paperwork? Plus, a lot of Thais go around without a driving license. Another toothless meow, this.

Perhaps, local lifestyle managers announced "points refund" option soon. ????

Penalty point system to be introduced next year for drivers in Thailand

A penalty point system will come into force nationwide from January 9th next year, to aid in regulating the behaviour of motorists and motorcyclists and in an effort to reduce the number of road accidents in Thailand, one of the highest in the world.

 

According to the new traffic regulation, drivers or motorcyclists whose 12 points have been reduced to zero by traffic violations will have their driving licenses suspended for 90 days, meaning that they will not be allowed to drive a vehicle or a motorbike during that period.

 

According to Deputy National Police Chief Pol Gen Damrongsak Kittipraphat, under the new system, each driver will receive an initial 12 points. If they commit a traffic violation, 1 to 4 points will automatically be deducted, in line with the nature of the infraction.

If only , getting  caught 3 times DUI before you lose your license for 3 months

is not really taking the problem seriously enough, the cost of bunging the Police

if caught is going to rise.

Before the car seats and restraints for children under 6 (which is very important), I believe that first they should solve the problem of scooters used as buses, with 4-5 children without helmets, often not 2 years old

Obviously most of the new system will only be applied to Farang road users who cause all the ploblams, plus fact lots of Thai no have licence and no need wear helmet for motorbike so it not change for thai, Khrub-on
