Eye Test.

I had an eye test at Top Chareon a couple years back, on returning to the U.K. my optician told it was the wrong prescription so I had wasted my money basically.

I have cataracts not serious enough to be operated on and glaucoma, is there anywhere I could have a proper eye test not one done with a young person who is only interested in selling you new spectacles in Pattaya ?

Not Bangkok Pattaya hospital because all they appear to be interested in is trying to sell a package for my cataracts but at the same time admitting I might not be able see any better after having them done at just under 69000 baht an eye.

Sorry not Pattaya but in BKK. Praram 9 Hospital Lasik Centre, went as recommended by a friend.

Fantastic service and a through exam that is free, They told me my eyes are not bad enough for surgery and recommended a monovision contact lens.

Not saying this is for you but for the service they provide (free) I was impressed at their honesty.... I went there looking for Lasik and they could have easily taken advantage.

Rutnin Eye Hospital on Bangkok is what I use for a serious general examination by doctors, including new prescriptions.

Staff in those optical shops, well, they can operate the two machines to make prescriptions, but that is it.

I am specifically looking at Pattaya, I don’t have transport.

Rutnin Eye Hospital is definitely THE best. Maybe best in the World. You don't need your own transport to get there. It's so easy....Bus from Jomtien to the airport (www.airportpattayabus.com) 130 baht, One hour 45 mins. Airport rail link to Makkasan station 35 baht 20 minutes. Walk 10 minutes maximum to Rutnin via walkway through Petchaburi MRT station 10 minutes. Reverse the journey back. The hospital is definitely not expensive and has mainly Thai patients but you will also see many people from the Arab countries there.

Thanks for the info, I only want an eye test, I don’t require any diagnosis or treatment.

You could go to the new Jomtein Hospital  down on south Suk where it is run by BHP with the same eye docs but a bit cheaper I am led to believe. The eye center in BHP has the same doc at both places. Dr Santa a glaucoma specialist. Great doc wish excellent English and a good honest man I think. BHP eye center is not the same department as the Supersight cataracts department. I am more than pleased with the BHP Eye center. And yes Rutnin is among the best but long way to go for a eye check up

good info.

Can anyone give a rough price Rutnin asks for a prescription? Just wanted a decent prescription so I can order reading specs online. I usually use Zenni online.

I was there yesterday, they don’t have the equipment to do the vision eye test for a prescription nor check the vision on my specs,  They called Bangkok Pattaya where I attended before, they do not have the device to check the strength of my spectacles either.. Jomtien suggested going to Top Chareon which I won’t be because of my past expensive experience with them.

The Eye center at BPH is not in the optical dispensing business. They do have a good eye doc on staff that can check your vision and give out a prescription. He just happens to operate a full service shop in Naklua near Banglamung hospital. He tested my vision at BPH and I went to his shop to order glasses and frames. I was happy with that. Dr Santa takes care of my eyes and is treating me for glaucoma. They have a couple other specialists for other eye disorders. But generally dispensing glasses is not their business.

I am trying to set up an appointment with Dr Santa, I am waiting for a reply, he is not full time at BPH only a couple of days a week.

Another place in BKK is St. Louis Hospital.  Dr Paradon gives a full eye exam including photos of the back of the eye.  He does not sell glasses only gives you a prescription.  I get my glasses from Zennieoptical.

I do business at Queen Sirikit hospital. I had cataract surgery, laser surgery for torn retina and tests for glaucoma. Excellent doctor, excellent service and dirt cheap. But... expect to spend all day there if you are patient enough to get great service for a good price, it is after all a government hospital.

If just for glasses THL at Terminal 21. Great service there too

Yes, Dr Santa is at BPH only Sundays and I think at Jomtein on Thursday but not sure on that. I believe he comes from Bangkok on those days
