New political parties are being launched to extend the rule of the so-called “3Ps” – generals Prayut, Prawit and “Pock” – after the next election, say political analysts.

Ruamthai Sarngchart (United Thai Nation), Thailand Together and Thoet Thai have been formed as apparent vehicles for a political comeback by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Deputy Premier Prawit Wongsuwan, and Interior Minister Anupong “Pock” Paochinda.

Analysts say the former brothers-in-arms appear to have calculated that the ruling Palang Pracharath Party, which lifted them to power after the 2019 election, is suffering waning popularity after more than three years in government. Palang Pracharath was formed from the remnants of the military junta that ruled following the 2014 coup led by Prayut.

He added that the “3Ps” do not need to win a majority in the lower House at the next election as they can count on support from the 250 senators appointed by their post-coup junta.

Until these unelected people are removed, Thailand will always be going backwards.

It's sad really.

All 250 Senators are appointed by the Royal Thai Military. Whomever controls the military thus control the Senators. If the 3P's are out of favour with whomever controls the military, than they will not get Senatorial support.

With a little help from their friends???

"Falcon Strike", running from Aug 14 to Aug 25 in the northeast of the country, was meant to "strengthen relations and understanding" with China.

.......................................... contingent will include fighter jets, bombers and airborne early-warning (AEW) planes...................................... drills will involve training for "air support, strikes on ground targets, and small- and large-scale troop deployment".

(IMO forget a "General" Election, Generals will be in charge again!!)

Good point. These 250 senators appointed by the Royal Thai Military have a 5 years term starting in 2017 (stand corrected). Also 146 of the250 senators are not military or police officers and were ordinary folks like teachers, professionals, farmers etc. Their loyalties can be changed according to the which party or parties are in stronger position post election. Besides they can be'persuaded" to switch loyalty. As you indicated, if the 3Ps and their proxy parties are to lose badly, the senators unlikely to continue with their support.

Don't vote on the party which one of these 3 P's on the list...They will never succed in getting the majority than.

And the 250 appointed Mp's have to go too as a new Government can start from stratch and not with the heritage of these 250 Mp who are only for the current Government in service. Get rid of them all and move Forward

Loyalties in Thailand change according to the amount of money on offer, not on anything else.

Long live juntocracy, the democratic new normal.

Kind of a comfort zone.

Expecting the sleight-of-hand coup, and the permission that accompanies, in the coming months.

Tradition.

The 3P's control the military budget and to large extent a lot of Generals and commanders... Prawit & Prayut have all the cards they need to control the senate and maintain a good outcome.

Most importantly is that they have special permission to do so.

Same as it ever was.

And that special permission may possibly be about to expire, possibly to an even worse set of puppets.

All this whimsy chatter and rhetorical debate regarding free elections and change is rather moot, as the system here is traditionally geared by the steadfast manipulation of Ammat patronage, elite loyalty, high blessings/permission and military-inspired coups. That's all it's ever been about.......even during those brief eras of civilian government.

No change, whatsoever, will ever come about until the traditional roots are severed completely.

End of.

I had three banana trees in my garden. Two blew down in a thunderstorm last week. They were big strong looking trees, but the roots were very weak.

Drill down through the layers which you have explained, essentially the whole construct is based on fear and the threat of force.

The two main "faces" of power ( the "Ps" f you like) were the architects of the last demonstration of that force 12 years ago in central Bangkok.

It's resonance may be fading. There are a number of changes which may make it much more difficult to repeat.

It was always a structure built on three pillars.

One pillar, has shall we say changed dramatically, perhaps failed.

The second, control of conventional media has been undermined by the rise of social media.

That leaves force, more specifically the military. The Navy and Air Force are largely irrelevant except as consumers of a share of national resources, the Police ineffective, utterly undermined by corruption; and the Army, well it draws it's power from it's numbers, but those numbers are largely drawn unwillingly from the pool of people most aware of and participants in the weakening of the other two pillars.

I think that the traditional roots are now weakened.

A bit like my banana trees...
