Justice minister says that studies are underway into "Magic Mushrooms" - could they be Thailand's next cash crop?

Thailand's justice minister made comments about magic mushrooms, knows as "het khee khwai" (buffalo pooh mushrooms), reported Daily News.

Somsak Thepsuthin said that studies were underway into how extracts from the mushrooms (psilocybin) could be used in medicines.

It is currently a Class 5 restricted narcotic despite growing all over Thailand.

It has been used by country doctors to treat insomnia but only in small quantities - in large doses it is a psychedelic narcotic and users can "trip".

Somsak said that the Narcotics Control Board are working with Khon Kaen university on studies and other universities are expected to get on board.

Though the minister stopped short of saying it will be decriminalized - like krathom and marijuana have been recently - he pointed out that it could be a great cash crop and a way for people to earn a living.

Especially as one kilo of "fresh 'shrooms" goes for 500 baht and 5,000 baht a kilo for dried.

He said that many studies by Big Phama in the west have noted psilocybin is effective in the treatmemnt for depression as well as alcoholism and nicotine addiction.

For now he warned people that selling it can land you in jail for up to 15 years and fines of 1.5 million baht.

Users can be jailed for a year and fined 20,000 baht.

Young people should stay away from consuming het khee khwai as it can be dangerous in the wrong doses inducing psychotic episodes and even death, he warned.

ASEAN NOW notes that years ago Magic Mushrooms would appear on menus at tourist places like Chaweng on Koh Samui under the listing "No Name" for 50 baht an omelette (early 80s).

Many people in Thailand still consume the mushrooms to get high.

The idea that it could one day be legal - at least for medical use - is intriguing.

For those who might need a literal translation of the Thai name, het khee khwai, for the psilocybin mushroom, it translates to water buffalo dung mushroom.

Microdosing is now being used by a lot of UFC and Muay Thai fighters. Coders in the Big Tech world have reported gaining great benefits from microdosing shrooms.

You could up in places like Pattaya, around midnight, seeing tourists looking dazed, confused and being led off to their hotels and condos by girls one third of their age (some with 5-o-clock shadows) just to make sure their gold, cash and other valuables are safe.

Hold on a minute !!!!!!!

Go for it.

But it's not so good for everyone.

Thank you ASEAN NOW, now we know where the name "no name" originates from...

Quite high, if you ask some of the old hippies in Lamai on Samui. They went to a remote beach on a neighboring island to fly high and party when the police got too interested in their mushroom shakes in the late 1970s; the saying is that a number of them still party over there and has done that at every full Moon night ever since...:whistling:

I had the same thoughts..

The utter enigma that is Thailand.....   on one side barbaric death sentence judgements on the other a modern and intelligently balanced outlook toward substances which have traditionally been villainized..

This moderate thinking is excellent - I would love to see this kind of developed thinking impregnate more of Thailand's political sloths.

Casino's, magic shrooms, marijuana. Great change is seemingly upon us. None of which I wish upon our children.

with the success had with micro-dosing mushrooms on more than a few conditions that isnt as trippy hippy silly as it sounds

My understanding-

Shrooms are being shown to have many psychological benefits, based on scientific studies.

So, this is very different than drinking or smoking weed. Very different.

And I have been told that there are several (at least) shops already selling shrooms via FB.

I would love to know more if anyone has any contact details.

What next Opium Poppy Fields? That's right keep us all stoned as things are really going bad.

Just legalize them and be done with it

So there could be a real chance that selling beer on a holiday will be allowed one day too ?

If Magic mushrooms are illegal , how come a Government

official is quoting prices for them ....

"Especially as one kilo of "fresh 'shrooms" goes for 500 baht and 5,000 baht a kilo for dried. "
