Doi Mon Jam villagers start protest march against demolition of illegally-built resorts

Doi Mon Jam villagers marched from their mountainous resort town in Mae Rim District of Chiang Mai province to the provincial hall this morning (Monday), to petition the provincial governor to stop the planned demolition of five resorts by the Royal Forest Department.

 

Natural Resources and Environment Minister Varawut Silpa-archa announced, however, that officials will strictly enforce the law and dismantle the illegally-built resorts.

 

Meanwhile, the Office of the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sought consultation with the governor about the possibility of delaying the demolition, pending the setting up of a panel, to include a member of the NHRC, to resolve the conflict.

If the resort is illegal, knock it down. End of story, why do the rich Thai families

get away with these illegal places. Enough.

Look at the picture. This is a Hmong hilltribe area and resorts. For reasons "never explained" Thai authorities find something wrong with minority owned resorts at a higher ratio than with kone Thai.  Case in point, Ban Thap Buek in Petchaboon. I'm sure their are tons of illegally built resorts in that Khao Kho area but it is the Hmong owned ones they go after. 

 

Don't expect Thai pbs world to tell you any of that, either.

You may well be right, but the fact remains that the resort is illegal. If you look at pictures from other sources, it's clearly an eye-sore in a beautiful natural surrounding. And btw, from what I read again from other sources, many or most of the protesters have actually no direct interest in the matter, just friends and tribal support. So, what would you do?

The article says that the resort is 'owned' by outsiders. Presumably the paid the locals so they could 'buy' the land and are probably paying them again to stage a protest.

The dome tent area looked cool for camping…. Singapore something similar that just opened I guess @ 300-400 sgd a night..
