THE owner of a shop selling cannabis infused craft sodas on Khao San road was arrested today (Oct. 7) after using a skateboard to hit a foreign tourist on the head and face before dawn yesterday, Sanook.com said.

Mr. Phawit (surname withheld), or Ken, 33, admitted that at 5 a.m. yesterday morning just as he was shutting his shop he saw that his friend was involved in a punch-up with a foreign man. He then stepped in to help his friend by using his skateboard to bash the tourist’s head and after that hit him twice on the face.

Although he quickly escaped, he was arrested at his home in Nonthaburi today. He added that the fight ensued after the foreign tourist looked at his friend’s girlfriend and tried to approach her.

A Western guy who thinks that all Thai girls are available and he thought that he would just have to talk to her and she would fall in love with him ?

I always think there are three sides to every story. What he said, what she said, and what really happened.

The shop keeper was darned lucky. Apparently in a certain other country, hitting someone with a skateboard is a capital offense and will get you shot on the spot.

It really isn't "typical Thai behaviour" though , it happens infrequently in Thailand and its a regular occurrence in some other Countries

You only want to believe it happens infrequently.   It's only REPORTED infrequently, and I've seen it here more than other falang countries.  Here with my own eyes, in falangland on the news.

same thing happens quite regularly in my home town. no matter how much it gets you off to think that way but this is not exclusive to Thailand.

To all the people here who blame the Thai guy: How long are you in Thailand and how often did any Thai person beat you or even try to beat you?

Personally, I am here since 25 years and it never happened. So it seems this is not typical behavior.

On the other hand, I saw more than once that someone was beat up because he opened his mouth far too much. Som nam na.

1. Take photos of the injuries right away.

2. Visit the local hospital for medical care. Get a receipt for this.

3. Make a police report.

4. The cops probably won't pursue criminal charges, but you can at least demand compensation for the hospital bill. This is what the Thais do and show off on the news every time.

Fighting is typical in Thailand Thai on Thai, many daily reports on Thai news. The fights with tourists are what get mentioned on here, though not an  every day event, it happens for many differant reasons, yes a tourist may open their mouth to complain about being over charged or for some other reason and ends up getting in trouble. Tourists do not know the famous Thai smile is paper thin and we farangs who live here know how it works and how to stay out of trouble.

All down to the cannabis infused soda stall for a head spinning skateboard lesson and other hallucinations ????

That was the bashers excuse for hitting him....stop the bull***t !

I thought cannabis was supposed to chill you out. Perhaps the attacker should try some of his own soda.

Why did he get involved in the first place? Was his friend coming off worst in the  fight?

Ofcourse how could he had not done his national duty of biting the hand which feeds.

Yes the story says a foreign tourist.  Which does not mean a westerner.
And the story states the tourist was assaulted because he approached and looked at the guy’s girlfriend.
Does not give specifics.  But does not say he touched the girl or what was said if anything.
I’m speculating.  But possibly the girl was not standing with the boyfriend at the time. And the foreigner thought the girl was alone.  I’m not condoning what the foreigner might have done. Because a guy has to be on something or stupid to attempt to approach a female that appears to be with a male.

Nevertheless.  You just don’t assault a guy for something like this.  Unless the guy became threatening and you need to protect yourself.  Or protect the female from harm.
As for the guy using the skate board.  The foreigner must have been pretty huge and violent for two guys not able to control him. And have to try to bash the guys head in.
And from what I see on Thai news.  There are many cases of assaults.  The majority Thais against Thais.  Where one person is assaulted by a group. Usually for the smallest things.  Behavior fused by an immature mentality .

Not sure that a crime has taken place as i can not see anybody pointing.

Not enough info in story to form an opinion, but y''all feel free to bash either, tourist or local.

Was the gal standing by herself, away from boyfriend, and foreigner simply started to engage in conversation ?

Harmless enough, and a simple, oops, sorry, didn't know she was with someone.  Or is boyfriend the jealous type, so insecure, he has to attack anyone who looks at GF.

Skateboard attack ... as stated violence is never the answer.

Does it happen elsewhere in the world, yes, and why I don't frequent places selling alcohol as their main business.

"What you looking at?" ... too often leads to punch ups, some with deadly results.

At 5 a.m..

The early bird gets the worm…

Or the skateboard ????

Was on the news the guy was a Canadian tourist????

Thailand has a huge drug problem (yaba) and there are many who inflict violence with little cause. (Have any noticed the massive recent headlines about mass murder?) This guy was closing his drug shop at 5am when he noticed an altercation involving a friend so he decided to smash the foreigner in the head with a hardened piece of wood. I tend to think it was more about hatred of outsiders than protecting a friend or the honor of a lady still in the street at that hour.

From the link, for the apologists who say it's never happened in their 50 years in the country. Just a couple of examples. I could find scores of random violence incidents inflicted on foreigners with a little research.

British tourist slashed to death in Kanchanaburi, friend badly wounded

TV presenter wife of German footballer to return despite being mugged

Man held for assaulting, robbing Russian woman

That area has no appeal to myself and probably 99% of Thai Visa forum members.

Fakesville Thailand.

hope the tourist got his girls LINE id and is happily ploughing away all weekend.

scumbag shopkeeper.
