This happened to me in 2004, when I was shopping for broadband. "Sorry, there are no lines available in your condo building."

Luckily, about the time I got that bad news, a "for sale" sign appeared in the condo's lift / elevator advertising a landline. I quickly bought it (I think 7 or 8,000 baht) and had my high-speed internet installed shortly thereafter.

Only in Thailand.

how do you buy/sell a landline?

In my apartment, i currently have a landline and True connection in my name (not the landlord's).

If I move out in the future, can I sell it to one of my neighbors?

How does the transfer take place?

Yeah, I lost a 7500 baht deposit on a rental house, because I checked to see if a landline was available after the fact. Too late. Check that first.

The way it worked in my case was that the seller and I went together to the phone company and completed the transfer paperwork. Once that was done, I went to the building manager, showed him the paperwork from the seller and phone company. He charged me 300 baht to have his maintenance guy move the connection to my room.

I am not sure how much interest you might have in your phone line if there are plenty of existing lines already available to your building. In my case, it was my only option. I HAD to buy a pre-existing line from someone else. The phone company could not (or would not) support any more lines to my building.

I was able to sell it almost two years later for the same price I paid for it.

Thirty years ago I bought a phone line for 30,000 baht. In those days they were advertised in the Bangkok Post classifieds and you looked for an area code located in your area and bought. Applications to TOT for new lines were about 10 years in queue until you received them at that time. In spite of TOT having deposits from every user they never had money to improve system at more than a snails pace. About 15 years ago enough was enough and they were forced to contract out to TRUE (name was different then) and TTT to provide several million new lines to try and catch up with the times. TRUE was limited to specific areas of Bangkok and TTT upcountry. This has greatly helped but there are still shortages in some areas so it is always advisable to check before renting if indeed a line is available. Most areas of Bangkok it is not too difficult to obtain a line but there still may be waits of weeks or months for many. Upcountry can be a nightmare.

We got lucky and got one of the last lines in our neighborhood. Had to pay for the extra line to run it down to our house from the road, but it was worth it. Apparently, even though there are many people in the neighborhood who would like a landline, TT&T has no intention of adding more phone lines.
