A Cambodian soldier was arrested yesterday after an overnight standoff with police.

 

The soldier drove a military vehicle at high speed through a checkpoint at Sa Kaeo on Saturday evening, prompting a chase from Thai police, eventually stopping at a junction. 


Thai special forces eventually surrounded and apprehended the soldier who was armed yesterday morning.

 

Authorities in Bangkok rescued around 80 cats and dogs being kept in cages at a house in the capital.


Police interviewed a woman at the house about asking for donations to feed the animals,  she responded by cutting her arm with a knife, she attempted to drive off and smashed into a wall, 

 

At the house officers found garbage, dead and very sick cats, the fridge contained more dead cats. 


The rescued animals were being taken to the Save elephant foundation in Chiang Mai.

 

The police say security is in place to cope with the APEC summit on the 17 and 18th of this month.


The operation will involve some 25, thousand officers to ensure safety and security for visiting delegates from 21 countries. 

 

The Government  has approved a plan to expand U-Tapao Airport in Rayong by adding a new runway, taxiways and facilities that will eventually handle up to 60 million passengers annually.


Members of the  Phuket Tourism Business Association, while pleased with an increase in international arrivals, have called on the government and local airlines to reduce the cost of domestic flights, they say would help increase passenger numbers. However they noted airlines continue to face high fuel and operating costs.
