Makkasan police lieutenant colonel Narongdech Butnampetch responded after a Myanmar man called Adee perched himself on a bridge over a crossing in downtown Bangkok and threatened to kill himself.

Traffic in both directions on Petch Uthai Road had come to a standstill as the drama unfolded.

Narongdech removed his tunic and sat down to sympathize with the plight of Adee.

He said he had lost his job and wanted to go home to Myanmar but had no money.

Narongdech said that the Thais and people from Myanmar were all brothers and sisters and he appealed to Adee not to hurt himself.

"Believe your elder sibling", he intoned earnestly.

The plea worked and Adee got down from the precipice and even "graaped" the Thai police officer in a highly respectful show of thanks, reported Sanook

He was then taken away to the police station to calm down and be processed according to the law.

Good man. In my experience there are many policemen in Bangkok that are very respectable characters. Good to see they can go beyond the call of duty to help out.
