Football - Hosts Qatar opened the 2022 Fifa World Cup and were easily beaten by Ecuador in Group A at Al Bayt.  Enner Valencia scored both of the goals for the South Americans in their 2-0 win. Tonight England play Iran and Wales take on the USA in Group B. The second match in Group A sees Senegal up against The Netherlands.

 

F1 - Red Bull's Max Verstappen won the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi as Ferrari's Charles Leclerc beat the Dutchman's team-mate Sergio Perez to secure second in the championship.
Sebastian Vettel in his final race took the final point for 10th place.

 

Rugby - Damian Penaud scored two tries as France stretched their unbeaten run to 13 games with a 35-17 victory over Japan in Toulouse in the Autumn series.

 

Golf - Rory McIlroy ended the year as European number one despite Spain's Jon Rahm claiming a third DP World Tour Championship title in Dubai yesterday. Rahm hit a five-under 67  to finish on 20 under, two ahead of England's Tyrrell Hatton and Alex Noren of Sweden. World number one McIlroy was a shot back in fourth after a four-under 68.

 

Tennis - Former world number one Novak Djokovic beat Casper Ruud for a record-equalling sixth ATP Finals title.


The 35-year-old Serbian overcame his Norwegian opponent 7-5 6-3 in Turin yesterday.
