THE THAI NAVY’S planned procurement of a Chinese-built submarine would probably be delivered beyond 2024, said navy chief Adm.Choengchai Chomchoengpat Tuesday (Nov.22).

The latest delay in the planned procurement of the Yuan-class S26T sub was primarily attributed to the failure on the part of the shipbuilder, China Shipbuilding & Offshore International Co., to install a German-made MTU396 engine aboard, thus prompting the offer of a Chinese-made engine for use instead, Adm.Choengchai said.

The planned procurement of the 12.4 billion baht submarine, which would be Thailand’s first in six decades, had been earlier scheduled for 2023, then postponed until 2024 purportedly due to the pandemic situation and in the latest development put off beyond 2024, according to the navy chief.

Nevertheless, Adm.Choengchai said the Thai navy would insist that the Chinese navy guarantee the quality and efficiency of the little-known Chinese-made engine in place of the German one for use aboard the S26T sub.

This has to be a joke, the Chinese are as bad as the Thai's at maintenance, they wait until it breaks down then fit a complete new unit. ...........................LOL

Sounds like someone has loaned China money for a change. And it was interest free. Wonder who the master negotiator was? Did they build in late penalties?

BMW does have three automobile plants in China. But with planes and submarines you don't just pull over to the side of the roadway when there is failure.

12400 million baht ?

That money could help building a sustainable energy network around Thailand ... anyway , what are they planning to do with that submarine ?

It will be moored in Sattahip next to the aircraft carrier that doesn't carry aircraft.

more likely the brown envelopes have already been used and cant be returned or they dont want to return them, everything they do involves graft and now they are going to take worhtless engines, shows just how bad it really is

Thailand has already stated their desire to fly to the moon.

Just gotta get the sub to stand up.????????

ok and now F35's with 700 hard and software failures and not able to shoot.

No - to save any additional expense to Thailand, the sub will be crewed by Chinese PLA crew and will patrol the south china sea to make sure that Thailand is not inconvenienced by any of their close neighbors.

The sub will be maintained in Chinese ports like Sihanoukville which also has a convenient casino for the crew.

Thai admirals will receive regular reports about its efficiency.

Stick 5baht and a candle on it and float it down the Mun river next Loy Kratong ?

Same guarantee you get with stuff from Lazada?

This is just another in a line of scandals within the thai military (I use the term very loosely). Yet an eye is not blinked at how generals who are not on massive pay end up billionaires! Very strange when the top military generals in the world can't accomplish this.

How is this the fault of Thailand? Of course, we all know submarine contracts are never late. </sarc>.

I hope it comes with a free recovery vessel , to follow it around ,

regards worgeordie

Closer to 2030 more likely; obsolete before Launch and unwanted to start with.   Only wanted by those we know will be pocketing millions of Baht for themselves !

It the Chinese engine don't work out I'm sure China will provide a coupon for a 5% discount on Thailand's next submarine procurement.....and maybe even free shipping.

Likewise, the Chinese will insist that in turn for such a guarantee, Thailand must act / vote the preferred Chinese way on all future global political, military and economic issues.  Otherwise:  ...."Oh so sorry, replacement items are out of stock, but we'd like to have our idle maintenance personnel & their "managers" hanging around your ports in the event supplies eventually arrive."

Turn it into a floating reef / barnacle farm, a la HTMS Chakri Naruebet, the Thai national aircraft carrier.? ????

They will use it to keep company with their aircraft carrier.

Operation, presumably, would be off the west coast of Thai peninsula, Andaman Sea area? The Gulf of Thailand is a teeny bit shallow to operate submerged undetected......????

Open for children's day once a year, bloody expensive toys...
