Alex Jones files for bankruptcy after Sandy Hook verdict

Conspiracy theorist Alex Jones has filed for personal bankruptcy after he was ordered to pay almost $1.5bn (£1.2bn) for falsely claiming a 2012 school shooting was a hoax.

Jones was ordered to pay the damages to the families of the victims of the Sandy Hook shooting following a series of defamation trials earlier this year.

The most notable came in October when a jury ordered him to pay almost $1bn following a trial in Connecticut.

Will this wipe out his outstanding obligations, how does the legal system work?

Not really surprised that his big mouth eventually caused him such a big problem!

Been morally bankrupt for years. Let's hope they get their hands on whatever he has secreted away, because he will have.

The IMO insanity of American juries. Did they actually think he could pay that much? All that has happened is that apparently those that would have got some money will get nothing.

One billion dollars was not justice

This is a ploy by Jones, it won’t work.

Furthermore, it will result in a detailed look at where he’s got assets and stashed cash.

My punt is he’ll go to gaol for the stunts he’s pulling in attempt to avoid the court Justice.

What makes you think that they would have got some money if the judgment was for less?

I agree but capital punishment was not on offer.

I hope the families get the loot and 15 minutes of play time with mr Jones armed with baseball bats what an absolutely vile dirt bag of a human being

I mean, he definitely had it coming and to say that it was a hoax and no one died was just so low class, but 1.5 billion??? Come on! There's no way they will ever get that much money out of him, so what's the point? What will happen next is that he will flee to a country with no extradition and run his conspiracy <deleted> empire from there in peace, enjoying whatever money he has set aside and will make in the future!

Unfortunately the real story is that Alex Jones saw what was coming months ago, transferred and hid most of his assets, and then filed for bankruptcy.

It lets the World know that what he says cannot be trusted and that his claims were completely false .

Even highly intelligent open  minded  people like myself were questioning whether his claims about Sandy hook were true or not .

Had it been an affordable fine , he could have just paid the fine and continued with his false allegations , the huge fine will stop him spreading false information again

Wasn't his coined term "crisis actors" a red alarm for you? Was there ever going to be a possibility that was true?

This absolutely vile p.o.s. deserves a long stint in jail and all his money and assets taken away from him.

A troll post has been removed.  This is the final warning.  Stay on topic, keep it civil or face a suspension.

There was a TV series in the US called Homeland.  At one point they had a character that was decidedly based on this piece of crud.

The episode where push comes to shove (season 7, episode 4) is worth a watch.

How? He can still work. Bankrupcy just means he won't have to pay out a billion $.

You don't get immunity from debts just because you declare bankruptcy.

This lying piece-o-???? ain't outta the ???? yet.

From:

Bankruptcy can be used to wipe out debts, but not if they result from "willful or malicious injury" caused by the debtor. Jones's lies appear to meet that standard, said Susan Block-Lieb, a professor of bankruptcy law at Fordham University School of Law.

"Defamation is pretty clearly an intentional tort - it is especially clear in Alex Jones's case,' Block-Lieb said.

An economist in the Texas case estimated that Jones is personally worth between $135 million and $270 million.

A long way short of 1.5 billion.

I understand that they can't take everything from a bankrupt person though.

I'm afraid it won't stop him. He'll just move to a place where he can continue to spread his BS.

Also, if you're as highly intelligent as you say you are then you sure as hell shouldn't be even entertaining the thought of listening to anything that comes out of his camp!

He's a nutcase!

Now there's an oxymoron if I ever heard one. Open minded, highly intelligent people would never listen to Jones.

I'm trying to find a way to construe this as a joke. So far no luck. But the search continues.

The families of Sandy Hook school shooting victims voted overwhelmingly in favor of a plan to wrap up Alex Jones’ bankruptcy proceedings by liquidating the right wing talk show host’s assets.

Jones’ general unsecured creditors—comprised mostly of Sandy Hook families holding about $1.5 billion in defamation judgments against the famed conspiracy theorist—voted 100% in favor of a Chapter 11 plan that would methodically liquidate and redistribute his property and cash, while preserving potential legal actions against parties affiliated with Jones and his Infowars program.
