Retirement Visa - importing personal possessions. Tax liability

Featured Replies

Colleague will relocate to Thailand from New Zealand.

Basis of his relocation is Retirement and visa to go with it.
He intends bringing personal possessions and some house furniture.
Will he be liable for import duty and VAT on the items he brings to Thailand?

Any insights in the import process and tax liability will be appreicated.

Yes there will be duty to pay but it is a reduced rate on recent second hand goods, nothing on what is obviously old.

It is 12 years since I did it, I used Asian Tigers and they handled everything.

Not directly visa or extension related. Moved to the business forum.

I used Asia Tigers for my relocation here 13 years.

at that time AT had a rather formidable lady who dealt with all transfer in issues , ie customs etc.

I had a meeting with her , prior to my move, extremely helpful and an impressive lady (seemed to know everybody!)

Suggested a few ways to deal with Thai Customs and , likely, saved me a fair bit of money.Probably she retired by now but ,overall, v impressed with the service I got from the whole team there.
