I ‘m hoping the fine people here can answer my simple query. I posted a question on the Thai work permits forum earlier and got an excellent response.

Is a UK tourist visa valid in Eire or vice versa?

I have both Irish and British passports, a perk of being born in the six counties.

I work in Thailand and entered on my Irish passport with a visa from Dublin.

I have met a fine woman of impeccable virtue and sound thighs and I want to whisk her off on honeymoon later in the year to be blessed with the holy water (down a pint of the authentic black stuff in the Dublin brewery before it is closed). You old romantic I hear you all cry. We’ll stay a few days in London on the way out to pay our respects to Gordon and serve the extradition warrant on Thaksin.

I have e-mailed the immigration agency in London but expect I’ll get a reply quicker here.

There’s more..

I searched the site in vain before troubling you fellas and glad I am that I did. I learnt about free EU family visit permits. Never heard of them before. Can she obtain one from the British Embassy by being married to an Irishman or vice versa ( Irish Consulate, you’ll be wanting to tell me) . And of course the question arises can they be used in both countries. If they are free I suppose I could get both if needs be.

I think that’s everything

Den,

A UK VV is not valid in the Republic you will need to get a VV from the Irish Embassy, but because of your Dual Nationality with ROI it will be free and they are very easy to deal with.

I will leave the Family visa to others because it needs a more complete detail than I possess.

Good luck

As a visitor she will have to apply for visas for both countries, however she will, of course, be allowed to visit the 6 counties with the UK visa, maybe you know if she could sneak surreptitiously into Eire to sample the black stuff (and get out again!)

As far as I'm aware the Irish visa will be free as she will be married to a UK citizen and the UK visa will be free as she is married to an Irish citizen.
