540 drivers have driving license points deducted on 1st day of new system

Altogether 540 motorists and motorcyclists had driving license points deducted on the first day of the enforcement of the points system yesterday (Monday), said the spokesman for the Royal Thai Police, Pol Maj-Gen Archayon Kraithong today.

 

The most common violations were failure to display a valid annual road tax sticker (233), not displaying license plates (81) and speeding (63). Details of other violations are not available.

 

He said that police have been ordered to enforce the system strictly, to promote discipline among motorists and motorcyclists and to reduce road accidents, loss of life and damage to property.

The point system are pointless, many drive without a DL already.

This will not change much, just more on the roads, without a DL.

 

The system could work, if vehicle was impounded and sold.

What a joke. I could stand in front of my condo after breakfast and spot more than 540 violations by the end of the day. Non compliance to road rules here is the norm. Sitting at a red traffic light this morning and watched as almost every motorcycle go through and merge with other traffic because they couldn't wait 30 seconds for the lights to change to green.

Do the math.  In a country of some 67 million, only 63 speeding traffic stops were made in a day.

 

This assumes that all those stopped were ticketed and had a point removed.

What about those holders of International Driving License? Do they get point deduction like Thais or...do they get DOUBLE points deduction for every mistake that could cost 1 pts for Thai?

 

I'm confused here as how this work, considering the infamous DOUBLE-STANDARD is mostly applied to foreigners in Thailand.

Which have not anything to do with road safety!

I can mention some things which would have effect:

drivers license

Overloads on any car

just implanted rule about safety belts, pickups are still loaded with people in back with no safety belts.

Drunk driving

Cars with no lights working or almost broken down totally, so ignoring annual safety tests.

Phone holding in car.

Motor bikes:

There can only be 2 persons tops on bike. Now you see even bikes with babies squeezed in.

Those persons wear helmets 

Lights and all are working proper.

Here there are motor bikes, modified sidecars with some springs, to carry wood or palm. There are some of them carrying 700 kg of wood on that motor bike side car, besides then people.

Phone holding

Driving in wrong direction, on walk ways 

 

The list is endless when it comes to real safety.

But then you of course start with the most stupid things, like tax paying.

I was going to mention the idea of raising the cost of fines (100k for drink driving), but just read that road incidents cost Americans $340 billion — or $1,035 per person — in 2019 (The $340 billion figure represented 1.6 percent of America's GDP that year). 

This kind of implies that people don't mind fines that they can afford. Or pay tea money in the Thai case to avoid fines. Points deduction don't actually frighten people into obeying the law but rather tell them they can get away with stuff until all the points are gone, then carry on as usual.
