WASHINGTON — The Biden administration plans to send M1 Abrams tanks to Ukraine, U.S. officials said on Tuesday, in what would be a major step in arming Kyiv in its efforts to seize back its territory from Russia.

The White House is expected to announce a decision as early as Wednesday, said the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the discussions. One official said the number of Abrams tanks could be between 30 and 50.

Maybe not "war hawks", maybe just "good men" doing something!

John Stuart Mill was in favor of mindless war escalation leading to WWIII...good to know.

This public announcement should escalate things nicely.

I'm all for helping Ukraine, but why all the announcements? Just do it discretely for goodness sake. I guess they can't resist the opportunity for Virtue Signalling.

It seems like the war hawks are in complete control in the Biden administration.

Politically Germany didn't really take much notice of little UK sending tanks, although it starting the ball rolling with other countries and now with the USA capable of sending hundreds of tanks has given the nug to Germany.

I will be surprised to see them there once hundreds of Leopard tank are in Ukraine though.

It would be good if US sent tanks though to Germany to show they take NATO defense seriously.

The Ukraine training for the tanks should have happen months ago, then they would be ready to use them straight away.

They will take longer to deploy them than it will to train the crews. The tanks aren't expected in Ukraine for months.

War hawks?  If the US and other NATO countries were sending troops, you might have a point.  But helping a sovereign country with arms to defend themselves against an invader....at the very least, it's the decent thing to do.

Nobody's business except The Ukraine and Russia...nothing but a family domestic dispute.

Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell said Tuesday “it’s time, past time” for the Biden administration and allies to send more military aid to Ukraine, and that the U.S. must provide more tanks and weapons to help Ukraine “win this war.”

The military-industrial-Congressional complex never misses an opportunity to sow more mayhem around the world while they seek glory and profits. Sad so many buy the lies and gaslighting.

It may take years before any Western tanks reach The Ukraine, and by then, Russia will have likely mopped-up the last of Ukraine. Nothing but another stupendous waste of treasure from Western armories.

The article you linked headlines US tanks. Your misquote seems intended to deceive. The link does not reflect your claim.

The article reports the US tanks, along with other nation's stocks, are already stockpiled at arms depots in Europe. You seem to be under the impression the two years is because the US tanks are in the U.S. This is not the case; and the long lead time is despite the tanks already being in Europe and near the front lines. There are a myriad of operational and logistical reasons for the long lead time. The article also points out that Russia will also have a big incentive to disrupt the rail and truck routes bringing in these escalatory weapons. The best of luck to them.

As the article notes these are the same rail and truck routes that have been supplying Ukraine all along. So far, the Russians have failed to interdict them. Not surprising, given their general incompetence.

As other articles have noted, the Leopard 2 should be fully operational  within 2 months at most.
