Twice in a calendar year is for "land border extension" aka border run.

Each entry from visa exempt or tourist visa can be extended Once. Don't be confused ...if you enter 4 times (or whatever) with visa exempt each entry can be extended by 30 days. The extension of it is still 30 days. 2

Seems pretty clear to me: No matter how many times you enter vis exempt, no matter how many days you were initially given (30 or 45) at entry, each time you may extend that stay once, and you get 30 days by doing so. As far as I'm aware extensions have never been for 45 days. Edited January 27, 2023 by JayClay 3

You clarified it for me, my son is visiting. Thanks.

How many times in 1 year are you allowed a 45 day visa exempt arriving by air from the UK ?

There is no limit, however immigration at some point will challenge you on continuous back to back visa exempt entries. They put in place a limit of 2 visa exempt per calendar year some time ago. Would make it simple if they would do the same for visa exempt via air. Perhaps they enjoy giving folk are hard time. Who knows. 1 1

Although it's possible that they may extend it further, please note that the current 45 day visa exempt entry is due to expire on the 31st March. 1

It is better to use the correct terminology, though, as it reduces the likelihood of your words being misinterpreted.
