US man who spent nearly 28 years behind bars for a murder he has always denied committing has had the conviction overturned in Missouri.

Lamar Johnson, 50, walked out of the St Louis' courtroom a free man after a ruling by Judge David Mason on Tuesday.

The judge said he acted after two witnesses had provided "clear and convincing evidence" that Mr Johnson was innocent.

He had been convicted of murdering Marcus Boyd in 1994.

Mr Johnson was visibly moved when the ruling was announced, while his supporters started cheering and applauding.

"This is overwhelming," said Mr Johnson, after leaving the courtroom.

Last year, Attorney Kim Gardner had filed a motion seeking the release of Mr Johnson after conducting an investigation together with the Innocence Project non-profit legal organisation.

Following Tuesday's hearing, Mr Johnson's legal team criticised the office of the state attorney general which had pushed to keep him in prison.

He didnt receive capital punishment .

Capital punishment isnt given out in cases like this

You don't think innocent people are executed? This man spent nearly three decades in prison before his innocence was proved. Trump wanted 5 innocent men executed.

"The Republican-led state attorney general’s office fought to keep Johnson locked up. A spokeswoman for the office, Madeline Sieren, said in an email that the office will take no further action in the case. She again defended the office’s push to keep Johnson behind bars."

You really could do with forgetting about Trump .

The whole world doesn't revolve around Trump

I mentioned Trump because his public statements (and full page newspaper ads) greatly increase the chance of an innocent man being executed. It's why capital punishment needs to be removed from the books in order to protect innocent people from populists like Trump who executed more people than any other recent president. He's relevant to the topic.

Not the world. no. This topic is about a US convict. You know, that country where Trump is the only viable candidate for the GOP nomination and so has a huge influence on public policy?
