Thai Rath reported on continuing action by Thailand's Department of Special Investigations after contact from the National Crime Agency in the United Kingdom.

 

The NCA had told the Thai authorites about 35 luxury cars stolen in the UK that had been exported to Thailand for sale in the kingdom.

 

They were worth 2.4 million pounds sterling or around 100 million baht.

 

The bilateral coperation had the full backing of Thai justice minister Somsak Thepsuthin and senior DSI officers.

 

Until yesterday 27 of the stolen vehicles had been recovered and are or will be on their way back to their rightful owners in the UK.

 

Yesterday the DSI announced that two more had been found.

 

Officers investigating a Ponzi scheme found a Porsche Cayenne at a showroom in Bangkok and a Mini Cooper at a condominium in the Thai capital.

 

The owners provided their full cooperation. Engine and chassis numbers matched those on the stolen list.

 

Six cars are still being searched for in the DSI probe.

obviously, the thief did not know much about automobiles, because a mini cooper is not exactly a luxury car

Do luxury cars come with wings as standard what with all the air miles they've been clocking up?

Yet in Thailand they are coveted by the Hi-So's and cost a pretty satang as well.

Always buy through the official channel, many of the grey imports are stolen from the UK.

Obviously, you do not know much about how Thailand classifies vehicles, "luxury" in Thai automotive terms indicates expensive, not luxurious.

That's what makes it a "luxury" car, the price here.

There is a well known scam where luxury grey importers target HiSo Thais & Thai  students studying in the UK, they give them the deposit for Hire Purchase and then the gang steal the vehicles, importing them to Thailand.  Meanwhile the student claims off the insurance policy and makes a bit of pocket money for his help.

I am curious about who pays for the shipping costs back to the country the vehicle is stolen from?

If the owner is reimbursed by the insurance company and the vehicle is returned to them, do they have to pay the insurance company back (I assume they would have to)?

The insurance company would be the owner.

For a stolen cars to clear customs both in the UK and here obviously takes a lot of connections and under the table payments and more then few crocked men, we know that in Thailand this is not a problem but seems that the UK has its fair share of bent officials as well.

The car thieves disassemble  the cars in the U.K and send them over in parts and them reassemble them when the parts arrive to avoid any documentation

They dont clear customs.

Good to see Thailand cooperating, cars that go to Nigeria have been identified but the Nigerian government refuses to cooperate. They go over in containers,as very few are checked
