Daily News Thai Caption: Kinaree lamppost drama!

Lamppostgate was in the news again yesterday.

This is a scandal in several places in Thailand whereby it is alleged that greedy local council officials cream off money from budgets in the installation of fancy lampposts.

Many are topped with the mythical half bird, half woman from Thai mythology, the Kinaree.

Most famous of these cases is in Choengnoen sub-dictrict of Muang Rayong on Thailand's eastern seaboard.

An online post said that forty of the 150 lampposts - that cost a total of 34 million baht - were going on and off. This was on the Pattana Prasert Road.

The post pointed out that the corruption case reported to the NACC (National Anti-Corruption Commission) had gone quiet.

Daily News went to investigate and found the lammposts in good structural order and had not rusted after having been in service for many years.

A local woman did say that some of them were on the blink, however.

They contacted mayor Prachern Hengyi who apologized to the public for the problem that he said was caused by lack of electrical power from a transformer.

The transformer was in the process of being replaced.

It appeared that the reporters had not gone so far as to ask the mayor - known as Mayor Lek - about the corruption allegations, notes ASEAN NOW.

As most things corrupt do.

A bit like the 3M donation to a certain party by a now arrested money launderer.
