The reasons behind migration to Thailand are mainly for employment (92%) and fleeing violence and other purposes such as education and food security (8%), according The International Organisation for Migration’s (IOM) metrics on Cambodian and Myanmar migrants, surveyed between August and October 2022 among those living in Tak, Ranong, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat provinces.

The report covers an analysis of employment, documentation, wage levels and other basic welfare, such as food, healthcare, shelter and education, through the lens of nationality and gender.

Despite the overall data showing that the situations of those from Myanmar are more precarious than their Cambodia counterparts in several areas, both bear considerable risk in each area and are in need of serious development assistance. The report also points out an obvious discrepancy in opportunities between women and men in each area.

Yet they're busy arresting tourists who overstay by less than a week in some parts.

Immigration seem to have got their priorities completely wrong.

The country absolutely depends on tourists in order that it doesn't degrade into a pennyless backwater - the pandemic proved this beyond any doubt.

They should act accordingly.

They arrest and deport migrant workers all the tome.

Also hassle and extort from them.

While there are ways to be legal here as a migrant worker, they are expensive, time consuming and complex.

Migrant workers contribute far more to the Thai economy than  does tourism. The This economy is primarily dependent on exports and utterly dependent on chesp migrant labor.  Tourism contributes only about  10%.

The vountry fmdid not by the way deteriorate to a "penniless backwater" duting the pandemic. Tourist spots suffered and declined,/collapsed but these in no way represent the majority of the country.

Voice of reason.

Why tourist will stay illegally? They should be arrested and deported. There is a reason for migrants worker to stay illegally but I don't see any reason for tourists to stay illegally except for the their arrogancies and a desire to flaunt laws.

They are acting accordingly, but Thai style.  They're trying to show how bad foreigners are precisely because it has been made clear how reliant they are on their money.

Undocumented migrants illegally living/working in Thailand could be stopped overnight by the closing of businesses and jailing of employers/owners.

Remember during Covid....the people using such migrants were left alone, I would go as far as to say many cover ups  occurred.

Could but won't because the financial beneficiary's of the trade are mainly government employees, as has been the case for decades and nobody is going to kill the goose that's laying the golden egg in the hub of corruption.

I don't think closing half the schools in Thailand would be a good idea.
