Trump Asks Apple to Rename Lake Ontario ‘Lake America’

Featured Replies

US President Donald Trump has asked Apple to change the name of Lake Ontario to “Lake America” on its Maps platform, Interior Secretary Doug Burgum said, citing efforts to carry out the president’s executive order on the renamed Great Lake.

Burgum told Fox Business’s Mornings with Maria on Monday that Trump had contacted Apple directly. “I’m sure we may be seeing that change coming up soon,” he said, adding that the president had reached out to the company.

Apple Maps currently shows the lake as Lake Ontario for users outside the US, where the border of the Great Lake touches Ontario and the state of New York. The BBC contacted Apple for comment.

Trump Executive Order

On Thursday, Trump signed an executive order directing the administration to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America. The order follows the collapse of trade negotiations between Canada and the US.

The instruction includes steps to update official US geographic records, including the Geographic Names Information System (GNIS), the government database used for mapping and place names. Burgum is directed to take “all appropriate actions” to implement the change.

Google And Other Map Services

Google switched the name for its US-based users over the weekend in order to comply with GNIS, according to a statement it issued on Saturday. Google said Canada-based users would continue to see Lake Ontario, and that outside the US the lake would be shown as “Lake Ontario (Lake America)”.

Other mapping services have not aligned uniformly. MapQuest, a US free web mapping service launched in 1996, said on Friday that “we’re not changing it” in a short Facebook post. The service also introduced a tool allowing users to change the lake name to any option of their choosing and share the results.

After MapQuest announced that it would not change the name, the app moved to the top of the most-downloaded free applications on the Apple App Store in Canada as of Monday morning.

Canada Pushback

The renaming has drawn pushback in Canada. On Sunday, Hydro One, an electricity utility company based in Toronto, apologised after its map displayed “Lake America”.

Hydro One said the name appeared because it was using a third-party mapping service. “We are working with our vendor to correct the issue as quickly as possible and restore the proper geographic reference,” the company said in a post on X. “We regret the error and apologise for any confusion it has caused.”

Other Ontario-based agencies also showed “Lake America” briefly, including Hydro Ottawa and the Liquor Board of Ontario.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford marked the dispute on Saturday by placing a large sign by the lakeshore reading “Lake Ontario Now and Always” in both English and French. Ford later told American TV host George Stephanopoulos on Sunday: “No one’s going to call it Lake of America. It’s been Lake Ontario for hundreds of years. It’s going to continue being Lake Ontario.”

Historical Names

The Great Lakes names reflect Indigenous languages, with four of the five lakes named Ontario, Huron, Michigan and Erie originating from Indigenous words.

Apple is a corporation and may feel they need to comply with the moronic Trump name change because they're obligated to not harm their shareholders and Trump would punish them if they don't cave. But

He thinks and acts like a 4 year old and wears diapers like a slow maturing 4 year old. Every year he’s been declining and by the time the tenure is over he’ll be acting like a two year old. Better watch out then as some of us have experienced the “terrible twos” with our kids. 😂

Seriously who thinks up all these brain farts that the GOAP comes up with. Some of them are to advanced for our Donnys thinking capabilities.

We Should Scorn Everyone Who Calls Lake Ontario by Its Ridiculous Trumpian Name

The president signed an executive order to rename the Great Lake, and now we’re going to have to buy our maps from Canada.

Couldn't have said it better!

Because she lost.

2024 was the Dems' to lose. They could have chosen 100 other candidates who would have beaten Trump.

I think it's time for the haters to stop blaming the people who voted for Trump and put the blame where it belongs. The Dems that ran a DEI candidate that couldn't cobble together a coherent sentence to save her life. (And before anyone says she wasn't a DEI candidate, remember that Biden specifically limited his choices to a Black woman, ruling out over 90% of the field)

And again... The sad thing is that they'll do the same in 2028. They'll put forward a commie, the DEI lady, or an abject failure of a governor (California, anyone?). They just can't help themselves.

So, a group of people think it's NOT OK for Trump to rename a lake, but these same people think it's OK to reassign their gender (Jack becomes Jill) ......Roger That!

But any individual that calls the Gulf of Mexico or Lake Ontario Trump's name are freely revealing themselves as total idiots.

Thank them for sharing.

Who the hell buys maps any more?

Will he also be renaming Lake Superior Lake Trump because that's what I am.

NB Lake Superior also borders Canada and is the largest freshwater lake in the world by surface area.

Many people learned the names of the Great Lakes using the mnemonic device SHOME.

He wants to change that to SHAME.

These idiots really don't think these things through, do they?

I worked in a department that wanted to create something called the Fast Action Response Team. They got as far as releasing a memo to us minions inter-department only. Being an IT guy at the time, we often think in shades of acronyms, and as soon as I got the memo I asked the question about the resulting acronym at a department meeting. We all had a good laugh at that, and they quickly changed the name to The Tiger Team.

I agree, that was their mistake because they again thought it was time for a woman. Two highly educated and experienced women were still not enough to beat Trump in America.

And true haters will still be haters no matter what. That is part of why Trump won a second time. Now look where America is and tell me this is really better than either of those two alternatives.

I used to live near the shore of Lake Michigan in Illinois and not even once did I feel that it should be called Lake Illiinois.

I guess I'm not presidential timber.

Absolutely. While Europe is being overrun with doctors and engineers, the US border is closed. I may disagree with a lot of Trump's actions. But he saved the USA from the fate that Europe is watching unfold.

And you do not think for one second that the situation in Europe is being exaggerated?

It is not ideal, and Europe has made mistakes, but honestly we are nowhere near some of the limits the US itself has experienced. In the 80s and early 90s there were parts of New York, Detroit and other major American cities where violent crime was on another level entirely.

America also has a long history of dealing with migration and instability partly connected to what happened in Central America, including conflicts the US itself was involved in.

So saying Trump “saved America from the fate of Europe” is a pretty dramatic conclusion. Europe has problems, but it has hardly collapsed.

Europe had chaos, wars and power struggles for centuries. Hitler was the balloon that finally burst, and after that Europe got the longest period of peace between the major powers in modern history.

Hopefully we do not need another Hitler type catastrophe before things stabilize again.

Anyhow, propaganda works as it always has. Same methods, same game, same results.

Trump would probably make a great dictator if you ever let him. The instinct for power is clearly there, the problem for him is that the American system still puts limits around it.

Who thinks Trumps first choice was to rename it Lake Trump , but some sensible

person in his administration (is that possible) said it would not be a good idea as

he has already named too much already after himself and it has not been well recieved

regards worgeordie

Lake America is really genius. Imagine all the marketing opportunities, Lake America flags, Lake America stickers, Lake America hats.

Where can we get these?

In a word, No.

I think it's being underplayed by the MSM.

From Denmark:

And that's just one of many examples that you won't see on the MSM. You have to go to "unapproved sources".

That chart shows a real problem in Denmark. Some immigrant groups are clearly overrepresented in violent crime, and pretending otherwise would be pointless. If you read my whole previous reply, I did not deny that Europe has challenges ahead.

But it still does not show that Europe as a whole is being overrun or that the situation is anywhere near collapse. It is a relative conviction rate by country of origin over a long period, not a measure of how dangerous Denmark or Europe is overall.

I do not dismiss the graph, but I would also not use it to prove far more than it actually says. Europe has immigration and integration problems in some places, absolutely. That is still a long way from saying Trump saved America from Europe’s fate.

You've got grooming and rape gangs in the UK, you have Ceuta, Sweden has conceded it's out of control, the IRA is reconstituting to go after migrants, AfD is taking off in Germany, Italy is closing their EU border at some level. And those are just a few examples off the top of my head.

I'd say it's getting pretty bad. Except in Poland...
