Ex-PM Thaksin vows to return to Thailand post-election, face jail time

Face prison, because of a fake verdict from the corrupt Thai courts? Rather stay in England now, until the courts aren't corrupt any more and a democratic government is so strong that the military doesn't have enough power to take power any more.

seeing as both were found guilty in their absence they would be legally entitled to request a new hearing should they return.  The reason they left was the almost certainty that the trial they would have attended had already made it's decision even before the trial had begun. THAT might not be the case should it go to trial again as their is considerable anti-Prayut sentiment within the Kingdom. Many believe Thaksin is the only person who can restore Thailands economy and standing in the world & personally I would agree with them.

You seem to have forgotten the huge financial loss Thailand made following the rice price fiasco vote buying scheme.

He could have done his two years a long time ago and it would have been over.
Really - how many politicians have served time here in Thailand.  It's almost a rite of passage.

He'll probably want house arrest.  This should be interesting.  Stay tuned.

I've actually taken the time to read a lot of posts!

I wonder if someone with greater knowledge than me could answer the following:-

Name one leader of Thailand who hasn't been corrupt?

Those who see this as an opportunity to 'bang on' about other leaders, please read the post again!

Have a great weekend one and all.

Six of one, half dozen of another.  Pick yer poison.  They love him in Isaan because he at least recognized their existence.  Sad state of affairs when that's all you got to hang your hat on.

They loved him in CM and that isn't Isaan. your geography needs attention.

And just how much was the huge financial loss Thailand made following the rice price fiasco vote buying scheme? After all, all the rice was sold in the end.

If he's Thailand only hope then it's truly doomed.

While I agree the economy was in better shape when he was in power he only gave the nation scraps from his fine dining table.

I came to live in Thailand during the last couple of years of Thaksins premiership, so am not really qualified to comment much on him, but there is one thing here. I have seen how bad the country has been with an unelected soldier as PM, I have seen all the lies and incompetence from him.

When I first came to Thailand I saw all the happiness of many farangs and was recommended by them all to come and live here.

If Thaksin was really deserving of getting a jail sentence that forced him to leave the country, where must that leave the present unelected PM?

From my own experience, am I expected to believe that Thaksin should be in jail and this unelected PM should not?

And what has the current government ever given the nation since it stole the whole country in 2014?

Words and unfulfilled promises of reforms and a country in a far worse state than when they stole it.

Has there been any sign of the police or military reforms, returning happiness to the people? Not that I or the majority of the country has noticed.

Not only was the economy in far better shape but Thaksin was voted into power by a free election vote by the people. After 4 years as PM, he stood for election once again and was voted back with an overall majority.

He was deposed in the time honoured manner by yet another military coup, as was his sister, Yingluck.

I completely agree with your post Bill. but your last paragraph, was it not the PM after Yingluck who was deposed by Prayut and his soldiers?

Yingluck was the last freely elected PM in Thailand. She dissolved her government to make way for another election and became the caretaker PM.

Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan was a Thai businessman and politician who served as the acting Prime Minister of Thailand following Yingluck Shinawatra's removal from office by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on 7 May 2014 until his deposition in a coup d'état three weeks after taking office.

Whilst serving in that position, on 7 May 2014, the Constitutional Court of Thailand removed Yingluck Shinawatra from the office of caretaker prime minister and defence minister following months of political crisis. The court found her guilty of charges of abuse of power over the removal of national security chief Thawil Pliensri in 2011.[11] In the wake of the May 2014 military coup, Yingluck was arrested along with former cabinet ministers and political leaders of all parties and held at an army camp for a few days while the coup was consolidated.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Niwatthamrong_Boonsongpaisan

Niwatthamrong Boonsongpaisan (Thai: นิวัฒน์ธำรง บุญทรงไพศาล, RTGS: Niwatthamrong Bunsongphaisan, IPA: [ní.wát.tʰam.roŋ bun.soŋ.pʰaj.sǎːn]; born 25 January 1948) is a Thai businessman and politician who served as the acting Prime Minister of Thailand following Yingluck Shinawatra's removal from office by the Constitutional Court of Thailand on 7 May 2014 until his deposition in a coup d'état three weeks after taking office.[1] Before becoming acting premier, he was Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Commerce, and before that managed the country's rice pledging scheme

There is more information in both links.

If I was a gambling man, I would have dbl Thaksin's daughter to win the election by a landslide and Prayut to be the next P.M.
