Attempts at global economic and trade sanctions are a fairly recent phenomena, historically, there have always been a majority of countries that will trade with aggressor or country that is perceived to be in the wrong. It's tricky, the world didn't sanction the US for invading Iraq, or take action as a result of the wars in Ethiopia or Yemen or the many conflicts in African countries, perhaps because they are mostly hidden from view and don't impact daily lives in the West. I'm not inclined to believe that Thailand shouldn't make trade deals with Russia, just because of the Ukraine conflict, after all, China is buying Russian oil, which until a year ago, Thailand was also buying, directly. 8 3 5 1 1

Popular Post BritScot
Think it's time the West dealt with Thailand which should of happened after WW2. If Thailand wants to get into bed with China and Russia they should learn there are consequences. Start with stopping all foreign aid, stop trade, confiscate all investments, property of all those involved in 2016 coup including the financiers! I love Thailand dearly but nothing will change till those running the country are brought down. 10 3 2 2 3 2

Last year, Saudi Arabia talked about pricing some of its oil exports in terms of the Chinese yuan. I am aware, I was trying to tease an answer from the poster who doesn't seem to know. In fact, ME oil has also been priced and exported in rials and dirhams also, things are slowly changing in an attempt to get away from USD. 1 1

RandiRona
I know Thailand is trying to hedge its bets but it has to understand that it is not China or India who can run their policies to their liking as bigger pool of population and talent allows them that flexibility. Trade is not bad but keep it low key affair and not flashy.
JackGats
What worries me about this is if Thailand gets affected by some sanctions or gets on a list of "not so friendly" countries. For example we could get our bank accouts back home cancelled because we live in a country that is too close to Russia.

I would suggest that Thailand needs US trade more that other way around . The US is Thailand's biggest trading partner . The US has other third world trading partners closer to home in Mexico and South America, so I would suggest its trade agreement with Thailand is only a preferential one in Thailand's favour. If together with other allies, the US imposed sanctions on Thailand, Russia/China, would not have the capacity to a absorb the loss of trade. It's not only trade but economic and humanitarian aid which would amount to millions a year if not billions over time, perhaps Ukraine would be a more appreciative beneficiary. US has been patient with Thailand's antics with coups democracy etc mainly because of the growing influence of China in the region. China and its Belt and Road diplomacy had bankrupted a lot of countries recently and is a dangerous path to take. Thailand has a bamboo ie flexible foreign policy which it has played for centuries but strain it too far and it will break. kingstonkid
The challenge right now that the world and not just Thailand face is that the U.S. is no longer the powerful country that it was. It is now more of a consumer than a provider. The U.S. has ceded energy power to Russia SA and South America. They are dependent in most things for production from Chinese manufacturers. Example I just bought a camera from AKASO which ways it is an American country. Anyone wants to guess where the camera is made and shipped from? The challenge is that when there is no one in charge or no country standing out people have to make deals with as many countries as they can in case they re the winners. NOTE that it was the city of Bangkok and Moscow this is not a Thai Russian MOU and there is a difference.
